Not a Rubik's cube

Here is a problem to stretch your mind.

  • You have a CUBE of dimension 1 inch x 1 inch x 1 inch
  • You put the cube in x, y, z plane such that the coordinates of the cube is (0,0,0) and (1,1,1)
Now listen carefully
  • You cut the cube at three places
  • i> x=y , ii> y=z and iii> x=z

"You" are doing all the work , now you give the answer to the puzzle..

How many parts you cut the cube ?

you're bisecting the cube 3 times, so it should be i = 2 pieces, ii = 4 pieces, and iii = 8 pieces

I came up with 8 as well...however, as I've said before...I'm NOT a math person!

If you placed the cube on planes x,y, and z it would be situated as follows-

One side (bottom) will be on the X plane, one side (back) will be on the Y plane, and one side (left) will be on the Z plane.

If you cut from the X plane to the Y plane, from the Y plane to the Z plane, and from the X plane to the Z plane, theorectically you could slide the knife across the side, back, and bottom of the cube without even cutting it. In this instance you would end up with one (1) piece, since the cube would be uncut.

Since the X plane is a vertical plane going from left to right, and the Y plane is a vertical plane going from front to back, and the Z plane is a horizontal plane going top to bottom.

In this case, you will still have only one (1) piece since all planes are perpendicular to one another there would be no cuts.

Picture the corner of the room you are in. Place the cube in the corner with one wall representing Y, one representing X, and the floor representing Z.
How would it be cut?

you're actually right, it can be anything from 8 pieces to 0 pieces depending on how far greater you make i, ii, iii than x, z, and z.

Reread the question.

(copied & pasted from above)

How many parts you cut the cube ?

Nowhere does it say anything about places!

You would need to cut from Y1.0 to Y0.0 or Y0.0 to Y1.0 somewhere along either the X or Z plane.

Similiarly, you would need cut from Z0.0 to Z1.0 or visaversa, somewhere along either the Y or X plane.

Otherwise you would be cutting along a diagonal, or a 90 degree angle to go from adjacent plane to another.

Addendum-

If you did cut diagonal across the planes you then you would end up with 5 pieces by lopping off three edges, and one corner.

The remainder of the cube would constitute the fifth piece.

Well Im new to these sorts of things....but going off of my understanding of planes and graphs and such. wouldn't we(if it is saying cut along the line x=y)make a cut along the lie with a slope of 1? therefore cutting the cube into two halves from corner to corner. then doing the same for the rest of the sides. ending up with 8

There is no clarification as to which puzzles are daily puzzles and which are monthly ones. Kind of hard to know when one specific puzzle is going to be answered.

It wasn't cut into any parts, it was simply cut in to, not through.
