Heard of Mock Turtle ?

Can you replace "?" using Mock Turtle's Arithmetic* and make the statement true ?

? 1 ? 2 ? 3 ? 4 ? 5 ? 6 ? 7 ? 8 ? 9 = 10

* The Mock Turtle went on. “We had the best of educations . . . Reeling and Writhing, of course, to begin with, and then the different branches of Arithmetic—Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision.”

Well that is puzzleing but abviously:
Ambition=Addition, Distraction=Subtraction,
Uglification=Multiplication,
and Derision=Division.
I'm still working on how you get
?1?2?3?4?5?6?7?8?9 to equal 10 anyone got a clue?

The clue is the first question mark.

Good job gbusman, but it didn't say we could use square root, only addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

One way to do it with that in mind is

(1-2-3+4-5+6)*(-7+8+9)=10

It didn't say we could use parenthesis either, so if someone comes up with one where parenthesis are not used, you rock!

I think there are many answers to the problem Miguel is correct and probably the right answer. I managed to get
(1+2)/3+4+5+6-7-8+9=10

There are exactly 172 answers without using '(' (I cheated and made a small C program, but I used my head in the first solution I posted). My favourite one is:
-1/2*3*4*5+6+7+8+9+10=10.

-1-2/3/4-5/6*7+8+9 = -1-2/12-35/6+8+9 = -1-36/6+8+9 = -1-6+8+9 = 10. If this is wrong, than I found a huge bug in excel!! :)

= -1/4-5/6*7+8+9
= -0.25-5/6*7+8+9
= -5.25/6*7+8+9
= -0.875*7+8+9
= -6.125+8+9
= 1.875+9
= 10.875

/ and * take precedence over + and -. So, -1-2/3 = -5/3 = -1.666(6) and not -3/3 = -1

All of Miguel's solutions are correct if you follow the proper order of operations (which nobody out of middle school should remember).
I wish we could take the acceptable operators further, though, so I could present my brilliant solution:

1^2^3^4^5^6^7^8+9=10

I think James has the idea. The problem never says to use more than one notation, not does it say that power is not allowed. We only need to think outside of the box! =)

This only works as long as the mathematic principle of PEMDAS is ignored.
The only distraction was this puzzle.

(-1)7+8+9=10
-7+8+9=10
1+9=10

if not then this
1-2-3+4*5-7+8+9=10
1-2-3+20-7-8+9=10
30-20=10
10=10
