Lucky Number !

Mr. Tito collecting data for census asks the man who answers the door,

"How many kids do you have and their ages?"

The man, a logician thought of playing a trick, replied "I have three children. If you multiply their ages you get 36, if you add you get my house number"

Mr. Tito a bit perplexed, but then smiled and said "that's not enough".

The man said, "I wish i can tell you more but I hear my oldest kid calling."

Mr Tito then says - "Aha ! now i know."

What about you ?

If he recognized the child's voice to be that of a 6 year old the other two children would have to be 2 and 3, or if it was a 9 year old's voice there'd be twins, both 2 years old, but if the child was 4, he'd also have a set of twins, both 3 years old... this is of course assuming the voice discerned the age as implied by the question. This answer is far from definite.

Though it didn't mention whether it was actually 36 years. could be months, as the cries of an infant would be most recognizable but this postulation implies, (assuming he has one wife) the children (triplets) are 12 months old which is an odd way to tally there age...

*edit:

repeat number patterns in paragraph one, for assuming the children are infants in paragraph 2.

i think i got it :) 2, 2, 9 are the ages.

36 = 1*1*2*2*3*3 (all in primary #)

the possible combination are:
1+1+(2*2*3*3)= 1+1+36 = 38
1+2+(2*3*3) = 1+2+18 = 21
1+3+(2*2*3) = 1+3+12 = 16
1+(2*2)+(3*3)= 1+4+9 = 14
1+(2*3)+(2*3)= 1+6+6 = 13
2+2+(3*3) = 2+2+9 = 13
2+3+(2*3) = 2+3+6 = 11
3+3+(2*2) = 3+3+4 = 10

tito says it's not enough. that means he's stuck with more than one answer. If tito knocked at the door he knows the house number and
there are 2 combination about that gives the same house number (#13)
1+6+6 = 13
2+2+9 = 13

if the oldest kid is calling, there is only one older kid which rules out the first option (1,6,6)

so the only possible answe is 2,2,9 and the house number is 13 :)

Isn't it possible that both of the older kids were born within 365 days each other? Or that even if they were twins, one would still be considered "older". So 1,6,6 seems possible...

yeh 1,6,6 could be possible

one kid could be born in jan the other in november or something

therefore 2 kids could be 6 but one is still older, and voices can be very different, maybe one a girl one a boy, noone is the same

My guess is 1, 4 and 9.

I also agree with Lillmiss. I was going to post my answer, but my reasoning is the same. Greetings!

6,3, and 2

the house number is 11

November 16, 2007 4:03 PM
Anonymous Joe said...

It could be any of those. In case you hadn't noticed, the house number is not given. Simply because two numbers turn out to be the same doesn't mean that that particular number is the house number! I don't know where you got that idea from, perhaps you should explain? Otherwise I think your answer is not complete.

But if the numbers weren't the same, the census taker would have known the answer from the first statement, because although we don't know the house number, he did.

ok..I cant figure it out that much..but couldn't the oldest kid be calling on a phone?
heck, 18,1,and 2 could also work...I'm not sure if there is enough info to really answer. Or it's too obvious and I am too blind to see

ANSWER - 2,2 9 and "Lucky" Number was 13 :)
---------------------

lillmiss has already given a great explaination

36 = 1*1*2*2*3*3 (all in primary #)

the possible combination are:
1+1+(2*2*3*3)= 1+1+36 = 38
1+2+(2*3*3) = 1+2+18 = 21
1+3+(2*2*3) = 1+3+12 = 16
1+(2*2)+(3*3)= 1+4+9 = 14
1+(2*3)+(2*3)= 1+6+6 = 13
2+2+(3*3) = 2+2+9 = 13
2+3+(2*3) = 2+3+6 = 11
3+3+(2*2) = 3+3+4 = 10

tito says it's not enough. that means he's stuck with more than one answer. If tito knocked at the door he knows the house number and
there are 2 combination about that gives the same house number (#13)
1+6+6 = 13
2+2+9 = 13

if the oldest kid is calling, there is only one older kid which rules out the first option (1,6,6)

While as always I'm very impressed with most if not all of the answers but I have to go with the man has no children at all and when the man says my oldest kid is calling it is no one at all and it is basicaly just brushing anoying people off that come to your door. I know this is not the conclusion that they intended but it is more realistic then any other answer could be hehe. Keep up the good work guys I'm very happy to see people that enjoy thinking as much as I do.
