Salesman and oranges

A salesman sold 1/2 of all his oranges and 1/2 an orange more to the first customer, same thing he did with 2nd & 3rd customer.

How many oranges he must have sold, if he had none left at the end ?

7

ended with 0
sold 1/2
means he had a total of half AFTER he sold half of ALL meaning he sold one orange to his last customer.
+ 1/2 to the 2nd customer = 1 and a half oranges.
that times 2 = 3 oranges.
so he sold 2 oranges the seconds customer.
add half to the total = 3 1/2
multiply by 2 = 7.
7 total oranges.
I want an orange.

I'm not so sure, try running trough it the other way, it doesn't come out right. Or could be i messed up...I've been looking at so many equations today that I'm kinda dizzy.

7 is the right answer
1st customer:
half of 7 = 3.5 minus .5 = 3
2nd customer:
half of 3 = 1.5 minus .5 = 1
3rd customer:
half of 1 = 0.5 minus .5 = 0

I came up with 12. O is the total number of oranges.
O=(1/2O +1/2) + (1/4O + 1/2) + (1/8O +1/2)

O= 1/2O+1/4O+1/8O+3/2
O-3/2= 4/8O+2/8O+1/8O
O-3/2= 7/8O
O-7/8O=3/2 or 12/8
1/8O=12/8
O= 8/1 * 12/8
O=12

That's assuming same as those who got 7 that the half an orange that he tacked on the end wasn't counted in the half of his oranges number use to calculate what he sold to the second and third customers.

x=the number of oranges
First customer bought: 1/2x+1/2
Oranges left=1/2x-1/2
Second customer bought: 1/2(1/2x-1/2)+1/2
Therefore oranges left=(1/2x-1/2)-1/2(1/2x-1/2)-1/2=
1/2x-1/2-1/4x+1/4-1/2=1/4x-3/4
Third customer bought: 1/2(1/4x-3/4)+1/2
Oranges left=0
1/4x-3/4 -1/2(1/4x-3/4)-1/2=0
1/4x-3/4-1/8x+3/8-1/2=0 (*8)
2x-6-x+3-4=0
x-7=0
--> x=7

7 oranges had the salesman.
