Each word is actually a combination of two words.
They all contain atleast two other words
catalog: cat, log
passing: pass, sing
canape: can, ape
medallion: medal, lion
berate: be, rate
foxnews: fox, news
not sure if this is 100% correct but just something that I noticed

An ass- is a donkey.
I remember my teacher calling a student an ass once and the student threathned action for being disrespectful, the teacher said go look in a dictionary lol
I think this is a test of human's natural tendencies to see patterns in a seemingly chaotic and random set of data. I'll bet if a computer randomly selected any 6 words from a dictionary, we could come up with a whole list of similarities between them, none of which would be necessarily “wrong” or “right”.
