The Year 1961

1961 is one of those years ... which can be written upside down and it still remains the same , I call it Year which is Similar Upside Down (YSUD) just for the sake of it.

Can you tell which was the last year which was YSUD before this one and which YSUD one is the next ? Can there be any formula to find out?

The last one is 1881, and the next is 6009.

1691, 1881,
The only numbers which look like another upside down are 8 and 1 which are their own and 6 and 9.

The next would ne in the year 6009

Last: 1881
Next: 2112 (and for those of you who dislike the "digital layout" interpretation of 2, it woud be 6009, the year Congress outlaws use of Psychophons to link to the Quantum Mind to access data without payment)

To my knowledge, there is no truly mathematic equation for determining these sequences. But I'd love to hear it if there is one!

And don't forget 2002 if you don't mind the digital layout. (First after 1961.)

Using the "digital layout", the next year from 1961 would be 2002.

Hi, third anonymous guy again. Now as "Mike."
Sorry, I was under the impression the question was asking "from now," as opposed to "from 1961."
Doesn't matter, "1881" and "6009" were the years shown on the cover of the January 1961 cover of Mad Magazine, if memory serves.

To the third anonymous guy...

With regard to the mathematical formula... I thought this was intriguing =>

Year Gap
0000 110
0110 580
0690 190
0880 80
0960 41
1001 110
1111 580
1691 190
1881 80
1961 4048
6009 110
6119 580
6699 190
6889 1119
8008 110
8118 580
8698 190
8888 80
8968 38
9006 110
9116 770
9886 80
9966

These are the reflexive, so to speak, years I could come up with from 0000-9999. I arranged them in numerical order and calculated the time gap to the next reflexive year. A pattern does emerge! It does seem to break down at the end, but maybe I missed a year?

Don't forget the year 2000, if you use the 'digital format'. 2002 would not have been the next one

It would have to be upside-down AND backwards, because upside-down 1961 would be 1691.
2002, digitally speaking, would be the same upside-down as it would upside-down and backwards, as would 1881.
2000 and 2001 would only be the same upside-down.

As for the answer to the question asked-

The last year before 1961 that fulfills the requirements set forth by this YSUD (1961), would have been 1881. The next year after 1961 would have been 2002.

2882

5005
5115
5225

Now if we're to follow the letter of the statement before the question, it says years that can be written the same upsidedown as rightsideup-

That would eliminate any year with a 3,4,& 7, provided that latitude was given for the shape of the 2 and 5. If not, then only 0, 1, 6, 8, and 9 could be used.

Mathematically its actually rather easy to find the next one.
The reflective digits are
0,1,2,5,6,8,9
Their verticaly reflections are
0,1,2,5,9,8,6 respectively.

all years that meet the criteria are of the form
X Y R(Y) R(X)
where R(?) is the reflection of the digit ?
To find the next year after year ABCD, you need only find the smallest XY where
XY > AB and X and Y are reflective digits.
For example, for the year 1327, the smallest XY>13 is 15. Therefore the year is 1 5 R(5) R(1) = 1551.
Note if A and B are already reflective digits, you need to check if the year A B R(B) R(A) is > ABCD. If it is, that is the next year

I got a problem with this question...
1961 written upside down is 1691, and that's not the same year.. now if it's mirrored upside down, then it would be 1961... if we aren't talking about mirrored numbers, then only 1, 8 and 0 are correct. because 2 becomes a 5, a 5 becomes a 2, 6 becomes 9, and 9 becomes a 6. 3,4,7 all become either upside down (and not a number) or just plain backwards and not corresponding with any number.

ANSWER
--------------------
1881 was the last
6009 is the next

2002 is the next if digital layout is considered i.e.

2 is taken in this form

Will, upside down in YSUD meant

if you write it in a piece of paper and turn it upside down it should be same so it is actually mirrored upside down as per your comment

The only numbers are 1,6,8,and 9. I like that list of the differences. These are very cool problems!!!
