The Word Puzzle

Professor Nova, in the summer of 1798 invented a famous puzzle which goes like this...

99 + 9 = 9 ?

Now, all I need is to give a hint and ask you to solve it, right ? Right.

99 is a variable, like "x", only it's value is 0.

The tital gives the hint. Why would it be called word puzzle when it involves only numbers?

99 + 9 = 9 ?

If you rewrite this...

99 is 9 * 11

9 is 9 * 1

Therefore,

9 * 11 + 9 * 1 = 9 ?

- 9 * (11 + 1) = 9 ?
- 9 * 12 = 9 ?

- ? = * 12

The answer is obviously 'I'

Assuming any base 20 or higher.
example 99+9 base 20 =198 (189+9)
198 dec to base 20 is 9I

therefore 9-99=98= +_8x to the 9th
times pi plus using the quadratic formula
and pythagoream theorem then the answer is 67.45258 See that was easy

no, The way it looks it's asking if 99+9=9. I hope we all know what the sum of 99 and 9 are.

Im not sure about this question, but I like the german idea :)

The way i thought about it, because of the clue with the year was that the numbers represented a passage of time.

so I said 99 days takes us to the 9th of april, and nine months takes us up nine months to january, which will be in 1799

I dont think its right, but it was an idea

ok, maybe the ? can be treated like a variable, so the answer is ? = 12. dunno, bit of a vague puzzle, probably with an ingenious solution

To all you who thought it was a question. Which I did when i first read it. I'm sorry (not really) to tell you but it is not.

A question may be either a linguistic expression used to make a request for information, or else the request itself made by such an expression. This information is provided with an answer.

Questions are normally put or asked using interrogative sentences. But they can also be put by imperative sentences, such as "Tell me what 2 + 2 is." not

Not: 99+9+9?, as it is incomplete.

I'm sure if Professor Nova wanted his problem to be a question he would have asked a question.

A trick of mind called "The Word Puzzle". The hint is one word "Right". Therefore it is a question and the answer in one word is WRONG.

To all who arrived at the 1+0+8=9 solution: the sum of the digits of any multiple of 9 will be another multiple of 9. So the puzzle could as easily be stated as "99=9?"
I believe the clue submitted to us was "Right." So I'm inclined to think the solution has something to do with something on the right side of the equation, like the question mark being a variable for 12 or representing "+ 99." And if it's just verification, (i.e. "Ninety-Nine plus Nine equals Nine, right?") then a solution as simple as "wrong."
But there's (probably - I won't say there must be; that would be foolish for a trick question, but there should be) some significance to the 99. With any of the solutions I mentioned, it could just as easily be 9 or 999. How does 99 figure in?

...I didn't have a solution, I was just pointing this out.

"99 + 9 = 9 Dozen"

The clue was in the name: The "Word" Puzzle.
(as many of you noted.)

Sir (Partially, he got 12 as a value for x)
It was a bit out-of-the-box IMO

For all of you who liked the German comment, that person is completely wrong. "nine" (or "nein") in german means "no," not zero. Zero is "null."

Anonymous Soskop said...

most of you are wrong, the german idea was creative, but some of yall need a german lesson. nine is not german, its nein which isnt even zero, its no in german zero is null. and its a WORD problem. drop the math. look at the question

99+9=9?

the answer is NO

rephrase it into words:

Is ninty nine plus nine equal to nine?

99+9=9 is NOT true, therefore the answer is no

put a line through the = sign to make it not equal. that solves it

99+9=9?
108=9?
108/9=9?/9
12=?
therefore
99+9=9(12)

January 13, 2008 5:44 PM
Anonymous Panos said...

99+9=9
from 99 you get
9+9=18
1+8=9
so 99 became 9
therefore we have 9+9=18
and finally 1+8=9
so 99+9=9

we used do play this kind of game with numbers at school...!(it goes lke 1+1=2 but it can also be 11 an so on)

if u have a variable in the equation the it dosent equal zero because if it is zero then you dont put anything

so therfore there is no variable in the equation
