Adam and Eve

Remember the waitress who liked solving puzzles, well Johnny was again in the same restaurant and after having a meal, asked her for a detail check. This time, she thought of testing Johnny and came back with this:
 ADAM
AND
EVE
ON
A
-------
RAFT

And said, the largest value of RAFT is your bill, can you find out ?

$20? Just a guess. I've got a cold today and can't think too well. But the largest value of RAFT is your bill. T=20 in the alphabet. Either that or it's $1,816.20. And I really doubt that. But all the math doesn't add up either. At least when I do it.

if you do letters in the alphabet, like a1, b2 c3...ect. you find that it is:
R=18, A=1 F=6, T=20
so,if the first 2 numbers were $ and the other 2 were cents, and you add them gotether, you would get:
$19.26
but if she said the largest value, then that throws me off because that is the only one i can find, so there has to be more. i think.

Johnny needs to find a cheaper restaurant. His bill is $99.04

$86.85 ADAM
$ 8.26 AND
$ 3.13 EVE
$ .72 ON
$ .08 A
------ ----
$99.04 BOAT

After some thought I have come to this conclusion:

Since there are 10 different letters and 10 differnt numbers from 0-10, each letter represents a single number. For example,

A=7 D=2
M=1 E=6
V=4 N=3
O=5 T=9
R=8 F=0

Therefore,

ADAM=$7271
AND=$ 732
EVE=$ 646
ON=$ 53
A=$ A
------------
RAFT=$8709

Assuming this dinner is highly overpriced.

I could not figure out a solution with the R=9 and A=8, but it might still be possible.

Well I think that maybe the A in adam is like a 4 or something and the e is a 3...... and so on

Or even like adam is one of those things where all the letters spell out a word like Adam; a dollar and something with an m

It says the largest value of RAFT. If this were a subtraction/addition table raft would be the total how could there be a largest value? I think all those words above the line are gibberish to throw you off. The largest value of RAFT is 20. R=18 A=1 F=6 T=20

When I first read it, I immediately assumed each letter was a digit from 0-9 and that we had to find the values of each so that it would be consistent and yield the largest number when the letters of RAFT get replaced by the digits.

I, however, was too lazy to sit and by trial and error find a solution. Checking here, I see Shawn has found a good solution with R = 8. I think its unlikely for there to be a solution with R = 9.

I vote for Shawn's solution. GJ!

Shawn's solution checks out mathematically which I tried but failed so congrats on that.

But I wouldn't pay that much. My bill would be $24.

In Scrabble,
R=1
A=1
F=4
T=1

The highest points on the board this can get is if it starts on a double letter score and ends on a triple word score.

This will give (2*1+1+4+1)*3 = 24

We should assume each letter only applies to a number between 0-9 or we could just make up huge number for each letter and come up with an infinitly large number.

With that said it's pretty simple if you want 9999 you just make A = to 9 and the rest equal 0 assuming since there are 26 letters in the alphabet and only 10 possible numbers we can say some letters will have the same number so A and R can both be 9 for example.

ANSWER largest value of RAFT = 9871
-------------------------

Details
-------------------------
ADAM (8374)
AND (803)
EVE (626)
ON (50)
A (8)
----------
RAFT(9871)

GOT RIGHT
-------------------------
Partially Shawn , and 3rd anonymous guy

Shawn your answer is correct but 9871 is larger than 8709

Good Job by 3rd anonymous guy

$86.85 ADAM
$ 8.26 AND
$ 3.13 EVE
$ .72 ON
$ .08 A
------ ----
$99.04 BOAT

But it was a RAFT not a BOAT (you missed that)
