Happy New Year
My wife and I invited four other couples for the New Year's Eve. After yelling "Happy New Year! 2008", the couples hugged each other and handshaked "Happy New Year" with others. Various handshakes took place.
When I asked everyone, how many people they handshaked, to my surprise, I got a different answer from each. How many people my wife handshaked ?

It seems to me after reading the question that the wife hugged her husband. with 4 other couples on top of the wife and husband, that means 10 people were at the party. if she only hugged her husband and she cant handshake herself, then she could have handshaked anywhere from 1-8 people at the party.
This is just from first glance - I'm sure there is room for error in that comment haha, but correct me if i'm wrong.

If each gave a different answer she could have only shook 4 hands
yeah 4. there is no way that 8 people with a maximum of 6 shakes and a minimun of 0 can all have a different amount of shakes (couples dont shake each others hand). Asumming the person asking the question shook no hands then the uniqueness must be caused by the wife.
Then the only possibility of handshakes that would give a posibilty of the wife causing all guests to shake different numbers of hands would be if within the couples the people shook 0,1,2,3,3,4,5,6 hands.
The wife then shakes the highest 4 shakers leaving the totals at 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7
The other thing to note is that the person wo
ho shook 7 hands is partners wit the person who shook 0.
Hope this is what the question is getting at, but its hard to tell from the wording.
i think that she did not give a handshake to anyone, she probably just hugged them.
who the heck knows ?
0
because you usually huge the people you know well, and handshake people you know less, since he and his wife invited everyone they must know all of them well, there for 0 handshakes and 9 hugs
4 is the right answer. However, I think Sir's explaination is wrong (or at least i did not understand it). The maximum # of shakes is 8 (one can shake w/ all except spouse and oneself). Since there are 10 people, that means the numbers 0 through 8 will occur once each with one repeated.
My method for solving was making a column of letters A to J. I assumed A was the person shaking 8 hands, so I distributed a tick mark to each of the other letters except for B since A&B are a couple. Thus, B is forced to be the person with zero handshakes (understanding why, is the key to solving this). Then, I needed a 7 hand shaking person, and since all 8 remaining persons had one shake each, it did not matter who I picked. So C shakes 7 hands. That means I must distribute 6 new tick marks, one each to letters E thru J. This forces D to be the person shaking only one hand. Then the patter repeats itself. Below is the final list:
A 8
B 0
C 7
D 1
E 6
F 2
G 5
H 3
I 4
J 4
Now its clear that the person asking must be I or J, which means the wife must be I or J. So the answer is 4.
the question is far to vague to be able to give an an accurate answer so with that in mind i then have a 1 in 6ish chance of getting it right if i guess so
6 !

"When I asked everyone, how many people they handshaked, to my surprise, I got a different answer from each."
oviously!
1. Couples arent going to shake hands, they will hug.
2. Women will most likely hug both women and men.
3. Men will most likely hug women, but give a hand shake to other men.
4.Your wife probably hugged everyone, so she gave handshakes to no one.
well if all of them got different handshakes, then it doesn't apply to the sexes, but good guess
if they all got different handshakes, then the the sexes thing doesn't apply but good guess
If she's a good hostess she shook all eight guests' hands.
ur all rong the answer is 0!lol can u figure out how i got that number! in 4 days ill tel u
I'm thinking that you guys are way off track.
Doesn't the use of the word "handshaked" seem rather jarring?
To me, it doesn't seem to flow, which means that the author had another reason for selecting it.
What if "handshaked" were construed to mean "signed" (as in American Sign Language)?
That would mean that the couples simply signed to each other.
"Various handshakes took place", of course, because three discrete movements are necessary to sign the phrase.
Half way down this page is depiction of the ASL phrase "Happy New Year":

Note the handshakingness.
"How many people my wife handshaked?"
Well, that's pretty easy, then.
Zero.
She neither "touched palm to palm in holy lover's kiss" (Shakespeare can even make a handshake sound hot) nor was she reported signing the word "people".
C'mon, guys.
At the very least, you've got to give me a cookie for that one, even if it's all just scalding sailboat fuel.
:P
his wife has gave 8 handshakes all together
hahahaha
A candy for Nick for making me laugh
He has a wife?!?!?!?!?!
It's 4.
5 couples, assuming that they're all male-female couples, the wife would hug the women, and shake the hands of all the males, excluding her husband.
In short: She'd hug her husband and the four women, and shook the hands of the 4 remaining men.
well this one wasn't too hard if i got it right so 4 couples thats 2 for each couple so 4x2 is 8 plus probably her husband i would say 9.
0 it says .. THE COUPLE hugged each other and handshaked "Happy New Year" with others... referring to the other couples
You have a chance to shake eight hands of the other people at the party. No one shook hands the same number of times, so she shook 0 to 8 other hands because the couple hugged, and he asked all other nine poeple how many times they shook hands and got different answers. Yeah, that sounds right.
adding to that, since he did not ask himself how many times he shook other hands, his hand shakes weren't included in the number of hand shakes, thus no doubles.
I think it is none because he said the COUPLES hugged and shaked hands which is not referring to himself and his wife but only the other couples.
she had no hands and 5 of the guests were on the loo at the time so I think she handshaked everyones hand even here own which she keeps in a jar under the stairs
Her husband got drunk and told everyone that she picks her nose so nobody wanted to shake her hand. The only other solution I can think of is that she was to busy reading the book, harry and a bucked full of dinisors, to notice a thing and when the husband asked here how many hands she had shaked she screamed " 45 types of carpets all under one roof"
the couples hugged each other and handshaked it never says each that they shook the others hand so only one shake 1
My wife and I invited four other "couples" and the "couples" hugged each other and handshaked "Happy New Year" with others.
looks to me the couples did all the hugging and handshaking he and his wife did nothing
most probably ratfaced and mooning out the window at strangers passing by ,thats my excuse
sorry answer
the word others in the passage infers gate-crashers

ANSWER = 4
----------------------
DETAILS
--------------------------
The numbers must have been 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8.
0 must be married to 8
otherwise they would have shaken hands with 8.
1 must be married to 7, and 7 shook hands with everyone but 0.
2 must be married to 6 and 6 shook hands with everyone but 0 and 1.
3 must be married to 5 and 5 shook hands with everyone but 0, 1, 2.
4 must be married to the narrator.
