Alice and Bob
Alice and Bob were carrying pieces of timber to build a playhouse.
Alice said to Bob "Give me one of your pieces so that we shall both be carrying the same number of pieces"
"No" said Bob, proudly wanting to display his strength. "Give me one of yours and I shall be carrying twice your weight."
How?

Assuming the pieces are of equal weight, Bob is carrying 7 pieces and Alice is carrying 5 pieces.
Black Knight is right.
"a" pieces Alice has.
"b" pieces Bob has.
"w" wieght of each timber
a + 1 = b - 1
and
(b + 1)w = 2(a - 1)w
Solve to get a = 5, b = 7
The weight is irrelevant.
Initially Alice is carrying 5 timbers and Bob is carrying 7.

Sorry Black Knight and JediTony. It says that if Bob got another one he would be carrying twice Alice's weight.
What if Alice weighs 100lbs and each timber weighs 50lbs. So then Alice is carrying 1 and Bob is carrying 3. and if Bob got another one he would have a total of 200lbs which is twice as much as Alice weighs. And if Bob gave Alice one of his timber they both would have 2 each.
or it could be 5 and 7. was confused when I read it the first 2 times. I guess it is 5 and 7. Good Job
It depends on the weight of alice and the weight of the timbers, because the first statement is pieces and the second is weight so i would say bob has 3 and alice has 1
maybe alice is the daughter and bob is the dad. that way her weight could be easily doubled. and maybe alice is carrying the lighter pieces of lumber (seeing that building anything usually doesn't use equal weights of lumber). After all, they are building a PLAYHOUSE.
Ok.. this was a little too easy.. guess i'll have to search the archives to exersize my noggin today..
Alice 5, Bob 7
i think that the weight of the people is irrelevant for 1 reason...
a)it says bob would be CARRYING twice as much weight
and if you believe what Liz said, then why would bob be showing off his strength to his daughter?
you always take a word problem for face value alice weighs half as much as the timber bob is carry plus one...simple guys
what if they were hollow timbers and Alice was morbidly obeice
bob could just carry all of Alice's wood so that she feels like she lost a few pounds
Alice could weigh 100 pounds and each timber could weigh 50 pounds. If Alice is carrying 1 and Bob is carrying 3 timbers and bob got one of hers he would be carying 200 pounds twice wat alice weighs .. and if bob gives alice one timber they would have 2 timbers each.
Excuse me if I'm wrong, but is the weight COMPLETELY relevant? I thought they just wanted to know how Bob would carry twice as much weight so I thought if they were both originally carrying 3 pieces of timber and Alice was to give 1 piece to bob, Bob would have 4 pieces and Alice would have 2.
The logs that Bob would be carrying if she gave him one would weigh twice as much as Alice does. Not the logs because it doesn't say twice as much weight as she is carrying, it says her weight.
couldnt alice have 2 and bob 1 then alice gives one to bob so then bob will have twice as much a alice
Alice has 5 timbers and Bob has 7 timbers. I got it by using M&Ms lol.
5 & 7 can not be right. If Alice gave Rob 2 he would have 9 and she would have 3, I don't know about you but to me Rob has tripple the amount alice has.
The true answer is Alice is has 8 and Rob has 10.
ANSWER: 5 & 7

almost everyone, smart people :)
Or it could mean because of the way the question is worded at the end, it could mean one Alice gives him one of hers he will be carrying twice her body weight. The chances are it's not that but it's something to think about :D
