Inches and Fractions

A set of books, all the same thickness, is arranged on a shelf. They are right side up with the spine facing out. They are right up against each other. Each book is 400 pages long.
If each cover is 3/16 inch thick and every 40 sheets of paper is 1/4 inch thick, how far is it from page 120 of book one to page 320 of book six?
None of the books are missing and they are in English.

I came up with 14-3/8 inches, or 14.375 inches.

I come up with 7 1/2" based on the following:

40 sheets of paper = 80 pages

Book 1 = 3/8" (120 pages) + 3/16" front cover = 9/16"
Book 2-5 = 1 1/4" (400 pages) + 3/8" front and back cover = 1 5/8" each = 6 1/2"
Book 6 = 1/4" (80 pages) + 3/16" back cover = 7/16"

9/16" + 6 1/2" + 7/16" = 7 1/2"

What dose the books being in english have to do with anything?

15"5/8 if my math is correct being this late.

Each book is 400 pages (40 sheets = 1/4" or 400 sheets = 2.5". One book = 2.5" + covers being 3/16 * 2 or 3/8". sheets = 2"4/8 + 3/8" or one book = 2"7/8. 120 of book 1 to 120 of book six is 5 books or 14"3/8. 200 pages are 1"1/4, totalling 15"5/8. Here is my math broken down:

one book = (3/16 * 2) + ((400/40) * 1/4)
one book = 6/16 + 2 1/2
one book = 2"7/8

120 book one to 320 book six

range = (5 * 2"7/8) + 200 pages
range = (10 + 35/8) + 1"1/4
range = (10 + (4"3/8) + 1.25
range = (14"3/8) + 1.25
range = (14"3/8) + (1"2/8)
range = 15"5/8

Sorry, Tracy had it correct, mmlauser before you posted nothing correct yet.

no, she didnt have it correct. both of you took 400 pages as 400 sheets. its not, it should be 200 sheets because there are 2 pages, front and back on each sheet. therefore, for every 2 pages = 1 sheet. therefore, here is my math.

each book has 400 pages, or 200 sheets, therefore. from page 120 of first book to page 320 of last book, there are 2200 pages, or 2200/2=1100 sheets. 1100 sheets=6.875".

there are a total of 10 covers, 1 from book 1, 2 from book 2, 2 from book 3, 2 from book 4, 2 form book 5, and 1 from book 6. therefore, 10 covers x (3/16)inch = 1.875"

now, just add everything up. 6.875 + 1.875 = 8.75" or 8 and 3/4

where does it even say there is a sixth book... maybe there isnt so an answer doesn't exist. But I got the same math as MICHAEL!!! so I think if it is just basic math the answer is 8 and 3/4 inches from page 120 of book 1 to page 320 of book six.

from book 1 page 120 to book 6 page 320 is 1800 pages which is 900 sheets and equals 5 and 5/8 inches
each book has 2 covers so you would have 10 covers in all which equals 1 and 7/8
the total distance is 5 5/8 + 1 7/8 = 7 and 1/2 inches

Correct answer is 7 1/2 inches. Look at the math of the people who got it right to see how it works.
I know what threw most people off. It was the fact that 40 sheets = 80 pages. Another hitch for people who might have gotten it right is that the front cover of book one is right up against the back cover of book two. Some people calculated from page 120 to page 400 of book one, when it should have been 120 to page 1.

Oh, and I had to say the books were in English beacuse some languages, at least Hebrew, aare read from right to left.

The only flaw I can see with this question is how the books are stacked. Is book 1 on top of the stack or the bottom? Theoretically it could be counted ether way and the results would be different.

It never said they were stacked. The puzzle very clearly states that they were arranged in order on a shelf.

my reasoning 5 books multiplyed by 400 devided by 40 = 50 x .25 = 12.5 + 1.25 for the extra 200 sheets now there are five covers 5 x 3/16 = 15/16 + 13 12/16 =14 11/16

my reasoning 5 books multiplyed by 200 devided by 40 = 2.5 x .25 = 7.5 + 5/8 for the extra 100 sheets now there are five covers 5 x 3/16 = 15/16 + 8 2/16 =9 1/8 yea i messed up on the sheets and pags part
