Jug Puzzle

You have three jugs; and empty four cup jug, and empty five cup jug, and a full ten cup jug.
You need to end up with three cups of water in the ten cup jug.
You can only measure accurately by filling a jug up all the way. For example, you cannot fill the four cup jug up halfway and call it two cups.
You have no more water to add, and you cannot dump any water out.
So you can only dump water between jugs.

this will be a little difficult to follow but stay with me i wish i had a visual

pour the 10/10 to fill the 0/5

0/4 5/5 5/10

pour the 5/5 into the 0/4 leaving one in the five

4/4 1/5 5/10

pour the four back in to the ten

0/4 1/5 9/10

pour the five into the four

1/4 0/5 9/10

pour the ten into the five

1/4 5/5 4/10

pour the five into the four

4/4 2/5 4/10

pour the four back into the ten

0/4 2/5 8/10

pour the five into the four

2/4 0/5 8/10

fill the five once more

2/4 5/5 3/10

viola you can now change the amount of the other two if you want

fill up the four and five cup jugs and throw away the last cup-full in the ten cup jug. pour the four cup jug back into the ten cup jug and fill it up using the five cup jug. throw away the cup-full left in the five cup jug and pour the four cup jug into the five cup jug. fill up the five cup jug from the ten cup jug and there are three cups left in the ten cup jug.

ok, second attempt (duh...learn to read!).
fill the four cup jug and then pour that into the five cup jug. fill the four cup jug again (from the ten cup jug) and use it to fill up the five cup jug. pour the five cup jug back into the ten cup jug and pour the three cups that are in the four cup jug into the five cup jug. fill up the four cup jug from the ten cup jug and hey presto, you have three cups left in the ten cup jug.

*Eric* it says you have to get 3 cups into left in the 10 cup jug. Your way gets 3 cups, but in the four cup jug.

fill the 4 up then pour it into the 5 jug. then refill the 4 jug and top up the 5 jug to leave 3 in the four jug then empty then 10 jug and pour the 4 jug (with 3 in) into the 10

OR

fill the 4 up pour it into the 5 then refill the 4. this leaves 4 in the 4 jug, 4 in the 5 jug and 2 in the 10 jug then pour out the 4 jug fill the 4 jug with the 5 jug leaving 1 in the 5 jug then pour that into the 10 jug

-Dump water from 10 cup jug into 5 cup jug until full

-Dump water from 5 cup jug into 4 cup jug and you are left with 1 cup of water in the 5 cup jug

-Dump water from 4 cup jug back into 10 cup jug unti jug is empty

-Dump water from 5 cup jug back into 4 cup jug... now you have 1 cup of water in the 4 cup jug and 9 cups in the 10 cup jug

-Dump water from the 10 cup jug into the 5 cup jug until full

-Dump water from the 5 cup jug into the 4 cup jug until the 4 cup jug is full - you are left with 2 cups of water in the 5 cup jug

-Dump water from the 4 cup jug back into the 10 cup jug until the 4 cup jug is empty

-Dump the two cups of water from 5 cup jug back into the 4 cup jug

-Repeat this process one more time...now there will be 3 cups of water in the 4 cup jug with the 5 cup jug empty

-Dump water from the 10 cup jug into the 5 cup jug until the 5 cup jug is full

DONE.... too easy!

Good job everyone!
Some of the answers were a bit long, but the shortest answer (therefore the one I use) is in there a few times. Good job coming up with your own (even if they were a bit long.
