20 Comments:
because the moon is tidal locked so it cant show it
wtf?
well the moon rotates at the exact same seed that it orbits the earth, n thus we will only ever see the more cratered side of the moon
Here you have a poem of jest. The anthropomorphism of the moon to the womanly physique is clearly stated. But, we must delve further to unravel the true meaning behind these words. Joe Schmo (poet and literary accomplice) wrote these words as he stared into the heavens. Often represented in literary and oral history is the ‘face’ of the ‘man on the moon’. That left Schmo to question why is it that we never see the back of the head of the ‘man on the moon’. Changing the moon to a mystic, feminine form, it seems more apropos to consider not her long flowing locks but instead her derriere. Schmo pokes fun of the poets before him, and of the oral traditions of yore by asking this simple question to which there is only one thing left to say… Baby Got Back.
oh- and of course, being a modest character... she's not going to be flaunting that in our face. :)
uhhhhh...... can you repeat the question in a different context?
we can only see one side of the moon because we are moving at the same speed and the moon is orbiting us so the poem means we can't see whats behind the moon
The poet is obviously a romanticist since we never see the face of the moon.
Think about it.
You've been mooned.
did you know that the moon in not in fact round, but egg shaped, it has been pulled so much by the earths gravity, that it has changed the intire shape of one half of the moon. XD
Actually, Zach said it best and it's quite simple.
The moon is tidally locked with earth which means that one of its hemispheres is always facing ours (not in the north/south sense, but the "front/back" sense, hence a "dark" side of the moon). This means that we never see the so-called dark side of the moon. This also means that the moon's day is as long as its "year".
The moon is tidally locked because Earth's gravity is so strong that it forces one side of the moon to always face the earth and doesn't allow it to rotate on its axis.
But just so you know, the other side of the moon is rather ugly, too many craters :P
Although users are techncially correct, teh simple answer is line of site. As you would be able to see the reverse so called dark side for photography, therefore th reason you cant see teh back on teh moon is due to the fact you are looking at teh front
The moon doesn't really have a "dark" side, because as the moon goes through its phases, all of its surface will become illumanted at some point in time. It does have a "far" side that is always facing away from the earth. When the moon is at half phase, half of the near side is illuminated and half of its far side is illuminated.
it is the moons butt!! would you show your butt to the world?!?!?
i wouldnt. you sick mooners... nasty
As the moon orbits the earth, it rotates a few degrees in such a way that it not only does a full 360 turn on its axis without ever showing earth its nether face (i.e. dark side), but still completes an entire revolution around the earth. That fact still amazes me.
well yes correct with the rotation at the same time, but, the eastern hemisphere will see 1 side, but will see a different side of it than the western
Marian: This is due to gravity, it's not a coincidence, it's caused by Earth's gravity.
Eric: Everyone sees the same side. Think about it.
Edit: There is no easter or western hemisphere because the earth is rotating. What separates east and west of a globe?? We can separate north and south because we rotate on a north and south axis.
One side of the moon always faces us because it's "tidally locked" which means that the earth's gravity has such a strong pull on it that it forces one side to face us all the time.
You can also take a look at pictures of the moon from China and from the US, they'll look exactly the same. Always.
O, Trick of the mind
you're awfully kind
