I meant if he were to jump in the hole

nope the person would die( the equator would kill them )

he wont make it.. he would burn in the earth's core

either the busted gas line will get him on his smoke break or the mantle will melt his shovel along the way ._.

Once he gets to the middle of the hole, the gravity pushing on all (except the holes on opposite sides of him) sides of him would cause him to implode and he would die, if not(im still pretty sure), when he gets to the earth's mantle (thickest layer of the earth and is made completely of magma) would burn him to a crisp. also if those aren't enough (if he doesn't burn or implode), HE WOULD STOP IN THE MIDDLE, THERE IS NO GRAVITY KEEPING HIM GOING DOWN!!!

He wouldnt make it due to a number of diferent resons.....these include, the gas pokets in the earth...he would be likely to hit one of these which could kill him, the further down u get the more pressure there is which would cause him to not be able to breathe (unless he was in a special suit), the further into the earth you get the hotter it gats, and it doesnt take long to get to a point where the heat is too much it would kill him, then theyres the gravity thing, once he gets to core of the earth (and this is if the heat doesnt burn hiom to death) the gravity will pull him towards the core not allowing him to get any further, if he were to dig straigt through the earth (him thinking that china is on opposite side of world) from where i live, he wouldn't make it as i live in england and im sure china isn't on the other side of the world from me :D, so he would come up in ausie land. but im sure that the fact the shovel would not be able to dig through the magma would melt the sovel.......so he wouldn't do it.

Oh and heres a nother question on the same subject: how long would it take to dig through the earth (if it were possible) with a shovel (say the man were 30 when he started, and the shovel were brand new he needs to eat and sleep, and his wife want some fun)

if somehow he made it through the earth, he would end up in the indian ocean (i think) since i live on the east coast

where do you think kids in china try to dig to, if we dig to china?

America, since we're awesome.

Umm. No. he would not be killed by the equator, neither would he be burnt up in the earths core. He wouldn't be able to get to the earth's core because that sort of digging would take more than one lifetime, he would die from either exaustion or old age...

he would burn on the inner core, thats for sure

If the tunnel was already dug, pressurized, cooled, and devoid of air, and if it didn't turn at all and there were no blockages in the tunnel, then he would build up enough kinetic energy on the "down" trip to release it to the "up" trip. In other words, regardless of how impossible it would be to *build* the tunnel, if someone jumped into it, he would end up at exactly the same distance from the center that he started. He would have to bring his own air, to cut down on resistance, and once he reached the other side, he would have to grab something quick, or he would risk falling a return trip. Not feasible, reasonable, or cost effective in any way, but still theoretically possible.

This puzzle lacks so much information that it is impossible to provide an intelligent answer, as demonstrated by the responses thus far

Well aside from the fact that he would die from the heat and gases and such...
We all know that gravity comes from the center of the Earth, when you get to the actual center of the Earth, doesn't it make sense that you would get stuck?

CAGE omg THANK YOU you were the only one to get it right. :)

Sorry, Eric, but Cage is not right, gravity doesn't come from the center of the earth, it comes from the whole mass of the earth. At the very center, gravity is pulling from all sides, so you actually have zero gravity. Kenshin is really the only person that got it right, anyone who jumped in to the hypothetical hole would "fall" the first half, with gravity getting less and less towards the center, and then then be flung "up" towards china (or wherever) by his own kinetic energy, like a pendulum, with gravity only gradually increasing. He wouldn't make it to the top, though, due to air resistance.

finally, someone got it right (mo). I would only add that it is not only air resistance that would prevent him from reaching the very edge of china, but loss of energy & the pull of gravity. but if there was something to grab onto placed sufficiently deep in the china side--then he could climb the rest of the way. pretty funny. id guess it be a fast trip to china.

I'm not saying he is right about the gravity coming from the middle of the earth, i am saying that at the center of the earth, you would have no gravity; what would really happen is as you jump through the hole, you would gain speed until the middle of the earth then you would slow down then you would go the other way, until true equilibrium is reached and you would be stuck at the middle of the earth.

They would make it..... If they were dropped from high enough up (a.k.a a plane)

okay, even if he weren't to burn in the center of the earth...(I haven't read other replies)...

HE wouldn't make it, because if he jumped in, gravitational pull would only get him 3/4 of the way across, then back 3/4 the way. and keep going 3/4 the previous distance until he is eventually stuck in the middle of the earth.

He will die in the core @_@

he would die befor he reached the core because of the constant movement in earthe's plates. what would happen is that the plate would shift causing the dirt above him to possibly fall over and suffocate him before he even got to the core... that and he would die at the core

drrrr at the middle of the earth he would be going up in all directions... no more down

There is no net force(reletive to the earth) at the core so there is no acceleration however, people have this anoying little thing called inertia that means we keep moving without a net force so zero gravity doesn't mean negating all of gravity's effects so far, friction would be the only problem that and the irregularies of the earth, don't make the china hole come out a mountain. Btw I live in Aus so for us it would probly be canada, good old canada

The pressure and the gravitational force would either crush us or we'd be stuck in the middle unless we could force ourself out the other side (but that's going against a lot of gravitational forces).

he could dig down and around the earths core not straight down go on outside crust

If he dug all the way to china, then he's in china. The digging is the journey.

Either way, this question was retarded as the person who posed it.
