Money In The Bag

There once was a man with 7 stencils. He had recently purchased the stencils from a drug dealer named Albus. When the man asked Albus how much the stencils were, Albus replied, "All the money you have." The man was quite confused, for he happened to be carrying quite a large sum of money at the time. So the man said, "For 1 stencil, I'll give you 1/32 of all my money. But for 2 stencils, I shall give you 1/64 of my money. For 3 stencils, I shall give you 1/128 of my money."

The pattern continues, doubling the denominator for every stencil added. The man gave Albus a simple choice. He said, "Albus, you decide how many I buy." Now it would seem that Albus should just say only one since it would seem like he would be getting the most money for less stencils. However, Albus responded, "By GOD! Take them all!!!" Shortly there after, Albus was seen running down the street yelling, "I'M RICH! I'M RICH!" And indeed he was.

Why would Albus respond like this?

P.S. I posted this elsewhere and no one could figure it out so here is a HINT: It has to do with Albus's occupation, and NO you do not need drug dealer knowledge to figure this one out. SIMPLE MATH PPL!!!!

Could it be that Albus was high on his own drugs at the time ;-)

logically speaking, if one stencil costs 1/32 and two costs 1/64, then buy them all as that would be the cheapest at 1/2048 of his money for all seven. I think Albus's crack was bad.

unless he was paying for seven stencils individually, then it still would only be 7/32 at the most.... not really rich.

Maybe we have to look at stencils in another way. Why would a drug dealer sell those types of stencils? Maybe there is a drug called a stencil, or something else which has a special property? I dunno. This one is hard.

Or maybe his crack really was bad...

In sapanish, stencils(literally translated) can be plantillas or papelinas ,this second one is how drug adiccted call the cocaine wrapping form,so there (could be)the conection.
I have came out with something like Keenman, but can get rich that way...not worth the risck jajaj

The stencils are drug somethings. If the guy takes them all, then Albus will turn him in and get a large amount of reward money.

A wild guess: the guy is a forger and is going to forge billions of dollars with the stencils, but needs all seven to do so. 1/2048 of billions of dollars is more than 1/32 of "quite a large sum of money".

Thats a great sounding guess Mo but the question is why albus thinks he is rich not the man who bought the stencils.

WELL, IT'S A BIT EASY.COZ WHEN A FRACTION'S DENOMINATOR INCREASES, THE FRACTION'S VALUE DECREASES. SO WHEN HE BUY'S ALL THE STENCILS, HE ONLY GETS ABOUT 1/5000.HE THOUGHT HE WAS RICH BECAUSE IT IS TRICKY!!
HE MUST BE TTHINKING ABOUT THE 5000!!! NOT THE 1/5000!

Anonymous: Albus profits, too, if the guy gets stinking rich. Say he had $10,000 with him, then Albus would have got $312.50 if he sold him one stencil. But if the guy makes a billion with the stencils, then Albus gets $488,000.

Of course, the puzzle really sounds like Albus is going to get a fraction of the money the guy has with him, not of the money he is going to make, so my answer is probably wrong.

Albus mugged the man, and stole all of his money :P I WIN, but then Albus got mugged on the street cuz he was yelling he was rich, and found that the only money he had left was the money that he had to put in his shoe because his wallet was full! YAY I WIN! XD

Mabey you divide the entire thing by 7/1 so you would have to flip the problem around giving you 2048/1 x 7/1??

His real name is Rich.
i have no idea what the answer is, but i hope someone figures it out.

Two answers:
1) For the first he gets 1/32 for the second 1/64 so if buy two he'll get 1/32 AND 1/64.
2) He'll sell them one by one so he'll get 1/64 for every one.

its simple wording really the man had 7 stencils as said in the first part so if albus simply said -7 that would half the denominator every time so
-1 would be 1/16
-2 would be 1/8
-3 = 1/4
-4 = 1/2
-5 = 1/2
-6 = 1/1
-7 = 1/.5 or 2/1 which is twice the amount the man had on him

Did Albus sell him an infinate number of stencils but was only carrying 7 at the time? 1 divided by infinity is infinity. Therefore Albus was owned an infinate amount of money. Supplying an infinate amount of stencils might take some time though.

could someone just post the answer so the wild guesses stop ?

i got some possibilities:
1) he was high
2) the man buying the stencils had alot of money
3) Rich was his name
4) occupation: a person's usual or principal work or business; so he could've been rich before

those are my theories

Ok First off I want everyone to know that I am fairly pleased with all the responses. HOWEVER: There is no answer. THE REASON: I get on these all the time and laugh at how many nerds there are that get all scientific and shit, so I decided to post my own random one. I came up with it as I was typing it! I laugh at your attempts but the truth is, maybe you should get out and do something instead of sitting here posting answers to stupid questions. JOIN THE MILITARY MAYBE!!!

Pft thanks mate, and no they're not nerds, they only seek to further our knowledge of the world and everything there is know within it. This site is for the smart, the dumb (myself) and whoever else feels the need to share their knowledge with whoever wishes to receive it. It doesn't matter if you choose to post questions without answers or problems that are vague and impossible to answer outright or simply go and chew on a brick, either way you're gonna lose your teeth mate. Get off this site or get some sense into that propaganda ridden US marine head of your's. "In the navy" they might tolerate your thoughtless antics, but here it's all about the mind and using it to the advantage of you and the others who give a dam. Grow up or go back to your career doing what you do best - men. Is anyone with me?

I agree with mo and anonymous; shouldn't the marine be out fighting a war or something. certainly not wasting our time just because we are cleverer than him/her

Yeah, marines are kinda douchy until they hit about 45 and mature some, SEALs tend to be much more thoughtful people. For the record I am not either.

okay, so-
whoever said "one divided by infinity is infinity" is wrong, but 1 divided by zero is infinity. it's zero.

March 31, 2008 3:25 PM
Anonymous Siamese Drummer said...

Sorry, had to post that really quickly. But basically, if you divide 1 by 2 you get .5
if you divide 1 by .5 you get 2
if you divide 1 by .25 you get 4
and so on, your denominator gets closer and closer to zero until eventually it is zero, while the result gets bigger and bigger until it reaches infinity.
therefore, if albus sold the man 0 stencils, the man would owe him all his money divided by zero, e.g. infinity. A clever trick on Albus's part if I may say so myself.
(the dividing by zero thing is a clever little trick I learned in precalc...)

I just want to say that I'm in the military (navy), and we are not all like that. Some of us actually think before acting. So on behalf of the navy and all my brothers-in-arms I would like to say I'm sorry for a us marine's actions

Mabey its this:
If he gets one stencil, Albus gets 1/32 of his money.
If he gets two stencils, Albus gets 1/32 and 1/64 and so on.
Im not positive, but its better than some of the others.

all right lets clear this up...
1/0 is not infinity...
it is "undefined" which basically means incalculable
