Thinking Tripods

I recently bought a Tripod for a camera, I was amazed by the way it works. No matter how uneven the surface may be, I was able to adjust the legs and get a stable and fixed ground for my camera.

The question of the day is, why does a Tripod stands firmly, even when the three legs are of different length ?

isn't it something to do with weight distribution because of the 3 legs?

because the angles of the tripod (triangular based pyramid) are all acute so there is no chance of it "toppling" over or being heavier on one side

if the ground is uneven, the three legs must necessarily be different lengths to make the camera level(provided there is no level adjusting lever). However, even on level ground, if the 3 legs are different lengths, the camera will not be level, but the weight of the camera at worst will directly be over one leg--the weight can never be completely outside the area encompassed by the base of the tripod--at worst only on the very edge.
having said that, it only takes one tiny nudge for the camera and tripod to tip over at that point, so it is obviously much better when the weight is in the center of the base, not on the edge. of course, if there is no camera on top, there is no added weight at the top, and the tripod is more stable, but never as stable as when the top is centered within the area encompassed by the base.

It takes 3 points to define a plane. That is why a tripod's legs can be adjusted on uneven surfaces.

And the center of gravity always falls within the triangle formed by the feet of the 3 legs.. that is why it's so stable.

I am a tripod because all three legs are very stiff, you don't have to have even legs to accomplish this feet, but they all need to be very stiff.
