Where am I?
I traveled 500 miles due north, then 500 miles due east, then 500 miles due south and ended up where I started. Where am I?

south pole?!?
yep, south pole, notice when u look at a globe, the poles have a smaller circumfrence, meaning 500 miles could be quarter, or half way around the earth
well the guy above me is close, but it has nothing to do with circumference
if you start at the south pole and go a number miles north, it doesnt matter how many miles you go east or west as long as you go the same number of miles south as you did north, cuz if you go south you are always aiming for the south pole.
Yes, south pole is one answer, but not the only one. Can anyone figure out another location where it's possible?
It really could be almost anywhere. North america. 5oo miles north, east and south, and you're still in north america right? Canada, australia, asia, many countries, and a few states. correct me if I'm wrong!
The intent was that you return back to the same spot.. let's say within a few square meters..
you could be 500 miles from the north pole. you would go 500 miles to the north pole. then the 500 east would be impossible, so they would cancel out. then you would travel 500 miles back to your starting point
If no one figures out the second possibility, i'll post it tomorrow..
HINT: it is in the northern hemisphere.
DUH!!!!!!! Where you started, it said so right there.!!!!! Us penguins are mighty smart.
It would be 500 miles South of any point in the northern hemisphere where the circumference is exactly 500 miles. There would be infinite number of such locations.
the south ploe
500 miles south of anywhere that the radius from the earths axis is 500miles/(2 n Pi), where n is an integer. This way heading due east is exactly n complete revolutions (as 2 Pi r is the circumference). This leaves an infinate loci of points on an infinate number of rings around the world where you could be.
If you go 500 miles north, and go as fast as the earth is revolving east, and then go straight back down 500 miles, then you'll be back where you're started, as long as you're going the same velocity up and down.
This doesn't make any sense...
I vote we start at the north pole. Now then, I DARE you to try and go farther north. xD
yep.. South Pole is one..
and George and the Anonymous before him are also correct about being in the northern hemisphere 500 miles south of a lattitude line who's circumferance is 500 miles (or 250, or 125, etc).
