An Old Riddle

As I was going to St Ives,
I met a man with seven wives,
Each wife had seven sacks,
Each sack had seven cats,
Each cat had seven kits;
Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,
How many were there going to St Ives?

One! Just you.

Just because you met these guys
Doesn't mean they're going to St. Ives.

an oldie but still has some people going the wrong way. I agree with any and all that has given the unified answer of one. incidently folks they put the man he met in jail later on when they arrestrd him of having seven wives, even in st ives you can't have 7 wives. who could stand that anyway? lol

the easiest one yet... its just one... if he met them than they were walking towards him... the opposite direction... he was by himself... they must of been coming from that place

The answer is either one or zero depending on how you interpret the riddle.

"Kits, cats, sacks, and wives,How many were there going to St Ives?"

~How many Kits, cats, sacks and wives are going to St Ives? = Zero

or

~How many are present in this scenario going to St Ives? =
One(the traveler)

(haven't read any other posts)
It only says the man was going to St. Ives, and he met the man and his wives, who aren't traveling with him.
so, out of kits, cats, sacks, and wives, no one is going to St. Ives.
