Two stones

There was a king who wished to mary a young women, not suprisingly though she did not wish to marry him. Although he could force the women to marry him ( because he is the king and can marry whoever he chooses) he did not want to make himeself look bad. So he came up with a plan to make it look somewhat fair to his subjects. he was to put two different coloured stones in a pot, one black and one white. the white one meant she did not have to marry him, the black one meant she did. This king however was selfish and wanted her no matter what, so instead of putting two different coloured stones he put two black ones, so no matter what she picked she would have to marry him. On the day she was to pick the stone she found this out.

How can the women avoid marrying the king?

hint: when she picks a stone she is OUTSIDE in front of a small crowd to witness the event

She can grab one stone and throw it away, and then let the king to check the color of the remaining one. Because there will always a black stone left, so she can 'assume' that she picked a white one, so that she can avoid marrying the king.

depending how big they are, she could smuggle in a white stone of her own, or if they are bigger, pick either one and bash him over the head with it, you cant marry a dead king =]

she could throw one away, or if she had an audience, swallow it, then check the other pot to see that it was black, thus her choice mustve been white. ive heard this before, its not original

Just tip the pot over to show 2 black stones, thus showing up the king in front of the audience.

you guys are all wrong. she picks the stone then "stumbles" and drops it in a fire. then she tells the king that whatever color is left then the opposite was the one she picked. no they wont look in the fire cause its too hot.

I think that she should say, "The king is going to marry me anyway because both stones are black", and pull both stones out of the pots. Then everybody will turn on the king. "See? I told you!"

I also agree with anonymous 1. Actually, I read a similar thing in Donald Duck.

Every comment so far make it possible to have ambiguity. She needs absolute control over the situation.

She makes the requirement (in front of the crowd) that the jars be clear so that SHE has the choice to accept the king's proposal.

The king would have two options:
1)accept her requirement and while getting the clear jars get the right stones to place in them
2) or have her show the two stones as they already are. (which would show him to be a fool (or tyrannical)

well actual i have a bit diffrent view than others here..
i belive most in my 3rd guess, but i think the anser could been any of them.

1.
i see it this way, she is to pick a stone, and only two black stones..
then she simply can refuse to pick any stone, that way she don't pick the stone.. if the king picks it, then its not her that pick the stone.

2.
also he wont force her so at the alther she can just say no to take him as husband.

3.
it is start raining and the paint aint dry, the pot get filled with water and the paint is washed off

******
abot stumble and drop it in the fire and throw the one stone away.. well i feal thats bit easy to see by the crowd (and proberly guards)
- they can remove the stone from the fire (with some lock the fire could burned away the paint) but i think people would be able to see if the stone is white or black before it hits the fire.
*******

just my guess, maight be off road but worth a try

A way that might fool the crowd would be to hide a white stone up her sleeve, and have it in her hand as she withdraws from the pot.

cover her hand in chalk.. when she picks up the rock she could smother her hand all over the rock lol an then it would look whitish... then to make sure she could throw it into a fire :) an the ppl would see a white thing fly into a fire... noone can observe it closely then :P

made sense to me :P

some people have it sort of right but said in a wrong way.she's gonna get cough if she throws anything or hides anything. all she has to do is choose a container without opening it and say i choose the one inside this one and takes out the stone in the other, so the other one "has" to be white.

or say "this is NOT the one i pick" and take out a black one, the resulting one "has" to be white.

Ithink she would take a stone off the ground that was white.

tip it over making it look like an accident ofcoarse so the stones would fall out and the crowd would see what that he's trying to trick into marrying him

A simple way to do this so that no one looks bad is,

1. She points to any jar and says, "This is the one I choose."
2. She goes to the other jar and says. "This is the jar I do not choose."
3. She opens the jar that she did not choose.
4. She pulls out the black stone.
(black means marry king)
5. She show the black stone to everyone.
6. She goes home laughing.

in order to avoid having to marry the king, she would simply take both stones from the pot and allow all to see .

no need to make things complicated...
just say if i pick up a black ill be free and if i choose white then i will marry you. now the king doesnt want to look bad, (and if he says no people will become suspicious that it is rigged) and accept her proposal. she pulls black and won't have to marry her.

peace homies,
huzzy

Simple. She pulls out a stone, not showing it, and puts it in her pocket. Then she says, "Take the other stone out. whatever color that is, I choose the opposite." The king takes out the black stone, so obviously she chose white, even if it's black.

Since there is one pot and the stones will like not be painted - best solutions are to dump out the rocks and show the king as a trickster, or simply pull one stone out then say she is too scared to look at the one in her hand and have someone tell her which stone is still in the pot.
