Technically you're mostly wrong..although you can't see PAST most of your suggestions, you can still see IT. Also, darkness isn't a "thing", therefore it can't get bigger. The only answer so far could be the diseases that affect your sight.

maybe its a mountain the closer you get, the less you see of it.
i say a ball coming straight at you...
when its coming toward you and about to hit you and all of sudden BLAM it hit you!
so since you saw alot of the ball when it hit your face, you now fall to the ground and faint and cannot see anything anymore and you see a little bit...
