ok ill try to make it abit more accurate this time...
if you can make 1 stick of cigarette from 8 cigarette butts, how many can you make with 376 cigarette butts?

376/8=47
46/8=5 withe remainder 1
47+5=52
Except that 5x8-40, not 46. Therefore, we have 7 left over. Add that to one of the butts from the last five, gives you one extra.
...and, 47+5+1 = 53
So, I say, from 376 butts, gives you 53 additional ciggies and 5 total remaining butts.
Strangely (and I'm sure there's a mathematical reason for this, for which I don't care to figure out right now), 376/7 = 53 with a remainder of 5... weird!

Got it! since the number required to create one cig is 8, we divide the total number of butts into 7 creating 53 "almost complete" full cigs. As long as we have a remainder butt, we can use that but to create and smoke a cig essentially eliminating each group of 7 butts one group after another until we are eventually left with the remainder we started with, in our case 5.
So, if we divided any number by 7, the whole number would be the number of cigs created and the remainder would be the overall leftover butts. However, if we divide the number by 7 and the remainder is 0, then the total number of cigs created is the whole number subtract one and the remaining butts would be 7 because we wouldn't be able to get rid of the final 7 butts nomatter what we do.

376 butts gives you 47 cigarettes.
47 cigarettes can be smoked to give you a further 47 butts or 5 cigarettes with 7 butts left over.
These 5 cigarettes can be smoked to give you a further 5 butts. Added to the 7 previous butts gives you 1 cigarette with 4 butts left over.
This gives you a total of 53 cigarettes that you can have smoked and incidentally will leave you with 5 butts, so if you root around on the ground outside you might find another 3 to make another cigarette.

To the people that said this. These kind of questions are hypothetical. Realistically we know we wouldn't smoke cigarette butts, but this puzzle isn't asking you to smoke them and find out. Its logical thinking.
