i came up with 2870.. that's assuming a box is a square, not just a rectangle.
20^2 + 19^2 + .. + 2^2 + 1^2 = 2870
If rectangles are considered boxes, then it's a hell of alot more..
to euclids brother....

First off. there's 20 signle boxes across and down. that's 400. Then there's 19 2x2 boxes across and down (they overlap). then there's 18 3x3 boxes across and down. etc.. until you get down to 1 big box that is 20 x 20 in size.
0- how do you get boxes from a grid? are they flat? he never even said that the grid contains boxes anyway
is it me or are ppl in this site starting to take things waaaay too literally and/or over thinking?

just getting a laugh at one of the responses.
They said 0, do they NOT know what a grid is. a grid is made up of a bunch of boxes.
Mikie, I think that they said 0 because, if you reread the question, they ask how many boxes in TOTAL you would get. in the word "Total," there are now letters that are made up of boxes.
from my previous comment, when i said "now" i meant "no"
i got 401 because there are all the boxes in the middle, but then there is one big box surrounding them... so yeah
(20x20)+1= 401
