good job all... I believe the answer to #2 is both Niagara falls and the statue of liberty. Niagara falls retreats every year due to erosion, and the Statue of liberty moves approx 1 inch per year due to tectonic plate expansions in the Atlantic. Since she is facing east (towards the sister statue in France), that means she's moving back.

without looking at the others:
1. boxing
2. grand canyon, it is separating at a rate of 0.001mm per year
3. potatoes, garlic
4. strawberries, raspberries
5. pear is grown inside the bottle
6. dwindle, dwindling, dwindles,
7. yes, exclamation mark, full stop, comma, colon, semi-colon, quotation marks, question mark etc.
8. melon?
9. socks, shoes, slippers, stockings, stilettos, sexy shoes, smelly shoes,
I've since looked at the other answers:
I vote potatoes and artichokes as I've got both in my garden and both are perennial (although artichoke might not be a vegetable)
dwarf is good, i think i might have cheated with the derivatives of dwindle.
Lettuce sounds good although I still can't think of any time melon is cooked etc. My wife freezes bananas to use in bread so that's out.
I think skates or sandals or sneakers would have been better than my last 2 efforts.
Good puzzle
I think that Asparagus comes back every year... that's all I am going to say though... not going to mess with the other answers ...

The Staue of Liberty is out. She does face east toward the arriving huddles masses, but the the Earth's rotation is also toward the east. That would mean the Sacred Lady of Freedom is facing her movement, hence, not going backwards.
