air or shelter i'd say.
because naturally there already is air.. and we can't live without it, but if i were to be on an island.. i'd take water, food and something for shelter? or make shelter to survive..

Fire is something you can make unlike water ...or food which you need the seeds for ...and oxygen by its self is as good as CO2 you need all the elements in air.
just to clear up a few comments above.
a way out of the island.
A boat
it isn't fire... we didn't have fire all the time to cook our food... and it could be ground or air... to be on an island you need ground but to live we need air (to breath)
a fully operational boat (no holes)
the only thing that you really need is chuck norris!!
if you are on a freaken island you have ground, and if you are on a island on Earth you have oxygen...
so no point in asking for what you have. Fire would be nice. But a Boat or any means of transportation off the island would do the job

the companionship of the one you love to get through the hell you find your self in, to have that person is to have the last gem, love
companionship - I've always said you'll go crazy if the only one you talk to is yourself!

your taking it out of context if your on a island then your going to have air and sun providing that island aint britain =]
I would say sun but your on an island and as far as i know most islands get sunlight. so i would say the company of another person.
Since everybody is bring something,I wih for a gun ... I can the solve the inevetable meanless arguments between ... not get caught up in the fray and still have the boat, fire, and anything else ... ah good old American Capitalism. Nothing says friendship like a 357mag.

Haha. you guys have different ways in solving this qns. in addition to the companion thing, i think it is important that u would have another person with you, must be opposite sex. this will allow reproduction thus sustaining life and warmth do to the human body. this is just a guess though. and the answer 'god' is a lame answer, no offence, as god will always be with you.

first off Wilson was a volley ball secondly all i would want would be a good knife sure a rock chipped just right would make a knife like object but an actual knife is much more useful espesally for thoes of you wanting a boat you could be too far to survive a trip even in a fancy one but with a knife you could flag down a plane or use it to prepare this "food" you have been given and also start a fire to keep you warm
A lot of you are missing the point. The question never said anything about an island or about what things you already have like the sun or oxygen. It just simply asks you what essential thing, that you might already have, is very important to all human beings. In that case I would chose a companion as the third gem of life.
