Bathtub misery
Hercule Poirot knows that his bath fills in three minutes if the cold tap only is turned on full, and in four minutes if the hot tap only is turned on full. With the plug out, the bath empties in two minutes.
One day he find o his horror that Mrs Lemon has mislaid the plug, but he is intelligent enough to realize that he can still manage to fill the bath with both taps on full.

i assume it wants to know how long it will take to fill with both taps on and no plug... 12 minutes is the answer
I got 9.5 minutes...but I'm not sure if I was correct in the beginning. If the time it takes for the bath to fill up with both on (and the plug in) is the average of the two times individually (4+3=7, 7/2=3.5) then I believe I am correct.
1stRun: 3.5 - 2 = 1.5
2ndRun: 3.5 - 2 + 1stRun = 3
3rdRun: 3.5 - 2 + 2ndRun = 4.5.
However, if I'm correct with the aforementioned average thing, then it only takes 3.5 minutes, and 4.5 is over that limit by 1. So, subtract 1 from the 3.5 in the 3rdRun leaving 2.5.
3.5 + 3.5 + 2.5 = 9.5 minutes to fill up the tub.
Well duh! Conserve water and stuff a wash cloth in the drain to replace the missing plug.
The answer as above is 12 min.
Take the rates then calculate as inidcated:
Cold - 3 min
Hot - 4 min
Drain - 2 min
Cold 3 min = 20 tubs/hour
Hot 4 min = 15 tubs/hour
Drain 2 min = 30 tubs/hour
Hot and Cold together if volume is doubled 35 tubs/hour
So if you fill at 35 tubs/hour then you drain at 30 tubs/hour you are filling overall 5 tubs/hour which equates to 5/60 = 12 mins per tub.
"...but he is intelligent enough to realize that he can still manage to fill the bath with both taps on full."
O RLY?
YA RLY!
He just is not intelligent enough to know that he is watsing water in the process.
By using a mobile replicator device developed by the Jem'Hatak from the planet Zol, and found by him on a recent trip to the Nile, Poirot was able to fashion a plug and have his bath in three point five minutes with both taps on.
omg who ever wrote this sucks at english he did not even ask us to do anything he just informed us that the guy figured it out.... cool
holly cow! can you imagine the guys water bill?
where ftb is a full bath tub
h is the hot water rate
c is the cold water rate
d is the drainage rate
x is the minutes needed to fill tub
with both hot and cold and the drain open.
fbt=c*3
fbt=h*4
-fbt=d*2
fbt=x*(c+h+d)
ftb can be anything, lets use 24
since it is 3*4*2
then c=8, h=6 and d=-12
24=x*(8+6-12)
24=x*2
x=12

LOL HERCULE POIROT!!! what kind of a name is that???
Anyways my point is that since Mrs Lemon has mislaid the plug, he shall have to ask her to lay another plug.
I neva knew lemons laid plugs!
Keep it simple . . .
In 1 minute, the cold tap fills 1/3 of the bath, hot tap fills 1/4, missing plug loses 1/2.
So net gain in 1 minute is 1/3 + 1/4 - 1/2 = 1/12.
Therefore 12 minutes to fill the bath.

Does anyone else ever get the feeling that these questions are actually posted by someone who just wants to get the extra credit question on their math homework?
I think he used his poop for the plug and it disintegrated then he bought a new one
The real problem is that the plug was a little squirrel and he got mad at it and it ran away then he pooped to make a new plug then the comment i posted earlier is the second problem
who cares where the plug is
when i answer questions, i pefer questions to be asked!!! lol
Qu'est-ce que le question?
3423423 hours
Sheesh just take a shower...if he was that intelligent, he'd know a quick shower uses less than a bath.
ages .NO PLUGS DUDE
To blonde, what! Hercule Poirot, is Agatha Christie's very, very famous dectective. The fact that you have not heard about him is increadibly sad, I strongly recommend reading one of her novels about him.
he can definetely fill the tub but he cant use it because it will only get drained before he could even fully soaked in it..
conserve water please..
I agree the answer is 12.
3min = 20tubs/hr
4min = 15tubs/hr
2min = -30tubs/hr
Total = 5tubs/hr divided by 60 min = 0.08333333333tubs/min
1 tub divided by 0.083333 = 12 min
