Suppose that each spider caught exactly one spider, This means one spider caught one fly in 5 minutes.

If the spider is given 100 minutes then that single spider will catch 20 flies (100/5=20).

If there are 100 spiders all catching one fly per 5 minutes, that means there will be 2000 flies caught (20*100=2000).

ALBERTO AYALA says:

They will catch up 2,000 flyes, because it is 20 times more spiders, 20 times more time, multiplied by 5 flyes (rate) 20*20*5=2000

if the spider can catch 1 per minute then that's 100 flies in 100 minutes. multiply that by 100 spiders equals 10000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

err.... Five? i wasnt aware there were more flies to catch... the mathematical result should be void as this was not an equation but a trick...look for the non-logical explanation.

Yup D, Watts is rite im sure it is 5 because if 5 spiders catch 5 flies in 5 minutes... 100 spiders will catch 100flies in 5 ,inutes also. This is a very old puzzle but in the original one there are cats and mice.
The answer is 5, the prey and hunters are same (5 or 100) so time will remain a constant in both the cases

the question doesn't ask for the time, it asks how many flies can be caught in 100 min

if 5 spiders catch 5 flies in 5 minutes.it means 1 spider catch 1 fly in a minute.den 100 spider catch 100 flies in a minute.therefore in 100 minutes it will be ..100*100=10000.flies

i think there's 100 flies would catch in 100 mins. uhm... smply bec. if yu distinguish the ratio, and convert it into one1, then this will be the result... evry 1 spider can catch 1 fly in a minute. so if you calculate this, the result will be every 100 spider can catch 100 flies n 100mins@-@

if 5S * 5M = 5F then
S*M=F
so
if S=100 and M =100 then F=100*100 =10,000

400. 1 spider could catch 1/25 fly /min. therefore, 100*100/25 = 400

none cause the five flies were already caught

The correct answer is 2000 flies as Neelu said exactly 83 minutes after it was first posted. It was then explained beautifully by Sam on the 3rd post.
The problem is that people are concluding that 1 spider can catch 1 fly in 1 minute. Unfortunately that is not the case, and 1 spider will catch 1 fly in 5 minutes or 1 spider will catch 1/5th of a fly in 1 minute. Therefore 100 spiders will catch 2000 flies in 100 minutes.

the spiders could catch one fly each. it takes one spider one minute to catch one fly.

100 flies would be caught in 100 minutes bc 5 flies were caught in 5 minutes. simple.

Are you assuming that these flies are all sitting in a line, waiting to be caught?

MY EYES HURT FROM READING SOME OF YOUR SOLUTIONS

FACT:
1 SPIDER CAN CATCH 1 FLY IN 5 MINUTES

FICTION:
IF IT IS 1 SPIDER CATCHING 1 FLY IN 1 MINUTE THEN:
5 SPIDERS IN 5 MINUTES WILL CATCH 25 FLIES

(100 SPIDERS X 100 MINUTES)
DIVIDED BY
5(MINUTES/FLY/SPIDER)

THE UNITS WILL CANCEL LEAVING:

100 X 100 / 5 = 2000

THOSE ANSWERING 5 MINUTES PLS LOOK AT WHAT IS ASKED...

5 spiders - 5 flies - 5mins

1 spider catches 1 fly in 5 mins
1 spider catches 20 flies in 100 mins

100 spiders catch 20 flies each in 100 mins

= 2000 flies are caught between 100 spiders in 100 minutes
