Short Change
3 traveling salesmen check into a hotel. They all share one room and the owner of the hotel charges them $10.00 each for a total of $30.00. After a couple of hours, the owner calls the bell boy and tells him that these salesman come every couple of weeks and wants to give them a discount on the room rate. The owner gives the bell boy $5.00 and tells him to give it back to the salesmen. The bell boy goes upstairs and tries to figure out how to evenly divide the $5.00 for the 3 salesman. He decides to give each one of them back $1.00 and keeps the remaining $2.00 for himself. Each salesman paid $10.00 and got $1.00 back so each salesman only paid $9.00. If 3 salesmen paid $9.00, that equals $27.00 plus the $2.00 the bell boy kept is $29.00. Where is the other $1.00?

Its kind of irrelevant to add the remaining two dollars the bellboy keeps back on to the discounted total.
The three salesman lost $9.00 each
3 * (-$10.00 + $1.00) = -$27.00
The owner gained $25.00
3 * $10.00 - $5.00 = +$25.00
The bell boy gained $2.00
$5.00 - 3 * $1.00 = +$2.00
The net amount is $0.00
-$27.00 + $25.00 + $2.00 = $0.00
Therefore, no amount of money has vanished.
You don't add those $2.00 to the $27.00, you have to subtract them, so you'll have $25.00, and that's what the owner of the hotel have earned. It's like the 2 men payed $10.00 and the other payed $8.00 to the owner, but this one gave $2.00 to the boy.
You've made a mistake in logic.
Really the men paid 9 bucks each, for a total of $27. Of this 27, the bell boy got $2 and the hotel got #25.

there is no answer. this is a mathamatical error.
This is the same as the finger trick. hold up both hands and count upwards - 10 fingers - then count backwards on one hand 10,9,8,7,6 using all the fingers. Then scratch your head and say to the child you have 11 fingers 6 on this hand and 5 on the other.

That's cute, but my method is to count the fingers while repeating "eight" after each finger.
one-eight
two-eight
three-eight
four-eight
five-eight
six-eight
seven-eight
nine-eight
ten-eight
eleven-eight
You have eleven finger.

This doesn't make any sense. You can't make the people pay less money and still expect them to pay the same amount of money.
one dollar is with the owner of the lodge.
The owner is in possession of $25 , which is 8 1/3, 8 1/3 and 8 1/3 from the three salesmen. the bell boy retains $2.three salesmen receive $1 each. So a)(24+1)owner gets $25
b)salesmen get $ 3
c)bell boy gets $ 2
total $30
To make it simple if the bellboy give the men back there five dollars they would only have paid 25 in total than give them an extra dollar witch makes 28 total plus the 2 the boy kept equals a total of thirty therefore no dollar is missing.
$30-5=25
25dived by3 =8.33 cents repeating
add the dollar the bell boy gave back and it becomes 9.33 repeating
totaling $27.99repeating round up as computers do and the bell boy has 2 dollars and the sales men paid 9.33
theres no money missing. it depends on how you work it out.
the three men payed a total of $30.
the hotel manager gave the bell boy $5.
($30 - $5 = $25)
the bell boy gave back $3.
($25 + $3 = $28)
and kept $2.
($28 + $2 = $30)
the way the problem was solved in the riddle was meant for the sole purpose of deception =]
Steph G is 100%.
the trick is in separating the men's account whereas they paid as a collective.
25 paid to the manager.
3 returned to the gentlemen
2 kept by the bell boy.
30 TOTAL
whats the problem??????????lol
