Free Fall
Brad stared through the dirty soot-smeared window on the 22nd floor of the office tower. Overcome with depression he slid the window open and jumped through it. It was a sheer drop outside the building to the ground. Miraculously after he landed he was completely unhurt. Since there was nothing to cushion his fall or slow his descent, how could he have survived the fall?

Brad was on a small planet with very low gravity.
or
The building had toppled over last year, and the 22nd floor was now at ground level.
The window didn't say 22nd floor. The guy jumped out of the second floor.
He landed on a ledge or balcony just below the window he jumped out of.
Earlier, Brad had decided to end his miserable life and climbed outside the window onto the ledge. However, realizing that he was too much of a wimp to actually follow through on his plan he became even more depressed and - Overcome with depression he slid the window [back] open and jumped through it. [back into the building].
Having survived his fall, and being the looser that he was, he proceeded to the elevator, and not noticing the yellow tape and orange cones proceeded to step into an open elevator shaft and fell to his death.

Brad went into the building. He was a window washer.
Brad jumped just before he hit the ground just like in an elevator, saved his life.
I would say due to restrictions on the height of buildings in the country brad was working in, 21 floors of the building were built underground with only the 22nd floor above ground, so when jumping out of the window he was already at ground level and did not hurt himself.
This also explains why the window could be slid open far enough to jump through. Any higher and the opening would have been restricted due to health and safety, lest someone accidently fell out of a open window in a high story building.
In a place such as a city was limited, developers decided to develop underground - he was 22 floors up, but the 1st floor above ground. . .
He was a window washer, looking through the uncleaned window from the outside. Overcome with depression, from cleaning windows, he opened this one and jumped into the building, went down the elevator to the cafeteria and ate 3 hot dogs. That made him feel much better.
each floor was so high so that the 22 floor was miles up so then he was faling so fast the air particals hit him and brought him to a steady pace
or
he had a parachute
:D
When was this posted? i could have sworn i read this at least a few days ago...
i like the window washer idea, he jumped into the building that is why it was covered in soot...he was tired of cleaning it
he was outside the building cleaning he windows. so when he opened the window and jumped, he jumped inside the building........
The windows is bullet proof and he didn't opened it =)
this was posted 6/9/09 or 6/8/09. the answer is... he is a window washer and he was depressed by cleaning windows that he opened a window and jumped in the building. It didn't say he must jump to the ground. And he did not eat three hot dogs. he just went in. that is the answer
21 of the 22 floors were underground and the 22 was the ground floor in some sence. he jumped out the window and waved to his wife and faded into the foggy wilderness......................
Unhurt could just mean felt no pain he could of died instantly when he hit the ground and never felt pain at all.
It didnt say exactly how high each floor was, it could be on a different planet where they use some kind of dimensional tricks to expand an area that should take up about 2 cubic feet into a fully sized floor. Being on the 22nd floor, he would only fall about 20 feet, which is entirely survivable.
he used a parachute. duh.
You guys are stupid, they say it was the 22nd floor...
the only thing that saved him was that the building had BURNED down far enough for him to jump to safety..
Clue: Dirty soot-smeared window
He was staring through the the 22nd story window of the building next door, from the window of his first floor apartment
Here is how he survived. Being a sad, pathetic, whining little bitch wanting to kill himself, God saw this and did not want a loser like him to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. Satan, realizing that it would be more fun to let this bastard suffer more though living(remember, he WANTED to die), decided Brad was not welcomed in hell either. Brad has proven to all he is an epic failure in all he does. So much so, that he can't even kill himself properly because even God and Satan think he is a jackass.
Brad was a window washer outside the building... He jumped into the building.
The building is part underground, and the 22nd floor is at ground level
the guys that said that the 22nd floor was on ground lvl are idiots...
if the building had sub levels. they would start at 2B witch would be the 2nd closest floor to ground lvl...
the best answer i can think of is...
the building was a 22 story building and was scheduled to be demolished and Brad didn't get the memo. Brad barely was able to convince himself to go to work today, because he was depressed that his wife divorced him. seeing no one in the office he became even more depressed, because he wanted to ask the very sexy Susan out. he then became so depressed that he opened up the window ad crawled out. at that same moment the demolition crew started to blow up the building. floor by floor the building started to crumble. scared shit-less, he saw the only way to get out of the situation was to jump right before the building was destroyed. he jumped just in time. he was able to over come the force of the building coming down and rolled on the ground. he had survived!
Brad was a window cleaner, he had opened the window to jump inside the building.
Brad was a window cleaner he opened the window and jumped into it it did not saw he fell to the ground it just stated that it was a long drop to the ground.
"the guys that said that the 22nd floor was on ground lvl are idiots..."
I wasn't saying that that the 22nd stoet windows was on the ground.
The riddle never states for fact that the person is staring through the window of the 22nd story building from the inside of that building.
An argument could also be made that by stating there is a sheer drop to the ground, and next stating that nothing was there to break the fall of the man, that the riddle is stating that the man had to of hit the ground, after all - The carpeted floor of a building is certainly a cusion from a fall to the ground.
The window washer theory is probably the riddles real answer, but if you buy into the "no cusion to break the fall" theory stated above, the only possible solution would be that:
the man was inside of a building, but across the street from the office tower, on the 1st or 2nd floor of that building, staring out one of the windows, up at, and therefor through, the next door office buildings 22nd story window.
He then opened his window, jumped to the ground with absolutely nothing to break his fall but the ground, and due to the short 1st or 2nd story drop, he was unscathed
Do people even read the riddle? If so, how can so many of them point to a window cleaner jumping INTO the building if it states that it was a sheer drop OUTSIDE the building?
Same with using parachute - it said that there was NOTHING to cushion his fall or slow his descent so don't give stupid answers please!
I like the idea of 22 floor being the first above the ground, it didn't say it was the floor numbered 22 as first floor above ground would probably be numbered 1, but it certainly could have been the 22 floor of that building starting at the very bottom and counting up.
My first reaction was that if the window could be opened then there must have been some kind of a balcony or or yard outside of it, on the 22nd floor - many buildings have these ... his drop was outside, to the ground of the terrace outside the window (not the street level), nothing has cushioned his fall ...
The window was covered in soot because the building burned down, that's how the 22nd floor could be so close to the ground. Maybe It was a story or two up, but obviously not enough to kill him. He was depressed because the building had burned down. DUH. Why would there be SOOT on the window of the 22nd floor if ther was no FIRE. Fire = SOOT.
