Octagon Problem

Archimedes looked into the Octagon and immediately told that it is possible to create a perfect square out of it, if you cut it into five pieces and re join it.

Can you do that ?

Hi,

I'm not sure, I have never tried.

I'm a bit busy at the mo, I don't think I'll be able to do it today.

Are you sure you couldn't get someone else to do it for you with a bit more time on their hands.

I'm guessing you're quite young and not allowed to use sissors without adult supervision else you would do it yourself.

Maybe you could ask Mum or Dad or a teacher for help.

Take the 5 parts and melt them and pour into a square container.

Yes, but it would be hard to explain without making a picture.

To the first person, why would you even post if you didn't have the time? I don't see why people post just to say that they don't know the answer. "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool, than to open it and remove all doubt." And you have no idea how old he is, he is posting a riddle, doesn't mean he's a kid.

That's the best I could do for a picture. (I don't care if you say it looks more like a rectangle, but you get the point.)

Sorry the other posts, THIS is the answer. (Ignore the period in the first drawing, I put it there so the spacing would be right.)

The solution is to first draw lines from the midpoints of each side,
across the ocaogon as show. Then erase parts of the lines as
shown, Then you can cut into 5 parts. Then arrange the parts
as shown. The green lines show the original octagon edges.
