Poles and Fence

A farmer built a fence around his cows, in a square shaped region. He used 27 fence poles on each side of the square.

How many poles did he need altogether ?

I think you meant "post" not poles.

Each corner of the fence, there's a "corner" post. So the fence would be composed of 25 "side" post and two corner post. In all, there would be 25 * 4 side posts plus four corner post. That would be 104 posts.

yes i agree with you Ragknot.Unless it's some stupid trick question where one side of the square is against a hedge or somthing.

It could be a trick question...maybe the 27 on each isnt including the corners...therefore 4*27=104 plus the four corners is 108

The answer is;
(1*27)+(2*26)+(1*25) = 104
or,
(2*27)+(2*25) = 104
