Take the pole into the room

The pole from the previous flatland post, is now going
into a large room off a hallway. The walls are 6 inches thick,
the door is 30 inches wide. The pole is 24 feet long.
The hall is not very wide. How wide would it have to be for
the 4 inch diameter pole to be taken into the room without bending it?

If the pole had zero width, then the minimum width of the hall would be 50.481" approx.

Is the something wrong here? In flatland can a pole 24 foot long have a diameter? That indicates 3 dimensions, right?

No problem. The pole has a length and a width, it doesn't have a height. I had automatically taken your diameter to be the width.

The term "diameter" is only used for circles and spheres. For a Flatlander, a circle is a sphere. Vengeance at last :)

If you really want some brain pain, check out the volume of a hyper-sphere.

Made myself a liar. I just used "diameter" to describe a hexagon - unpublished work.

Here's a part of picture. It gives the angle you would need.

Chris, the answer you gave is the purple line, not very close.

You've changed all the dimensions.

... but I can see the purple line is way off from the 4" pole version. So I will accept that the width you gave is reasonable.

I just drew it in feet.... 30 inches is 2.5 feet, 6 inches is 0.5 foot, 0.3333 is 4 inches.
