The best thing since...
Three men are about to eat. Fred has five small loaves, Tom has three small loaves and Ed only has $8. Fred and Tom agree to share their loaves equally in exchange for the cash. So Ed gives Fred $5 and Tom $3. Fred and Tom, being smarter than Ed start laughing. Why?

maybe because they got now the same amount of bread as ed but the cash in addition? the loaves won't cost a dollar each??
^^
You're getting warm. It's a sellers market. Assume that Ed is seriously hungry and ends up with no cash.
Fred and Tom agree to share the loaves equally but they do not say with whom. If they share it with eachother, Ed has no money and no bread
That wouldn't have been very nice of them.
I didn't phrase the question precisely enough. Assume that they share the eight loaves equally among all three of them.
you cant devide 8 loves for 3 people DUH!!!
People do it all the time, I'll concede not mathematically exactly divided.
Tom is only giving up 1/3 loaf while Fred is giving up 2 and 1/3 loaves. Leaving them 2 and 2/3's loaves each.
So Tom got $9 per loaf ($3 / 0.33333) and Fred only got $2.14 per loaf ($5 / 2.33333).
Hi EB. So far so good. How much money should Fred and Tom have been given?
I hope Ed paid with Hong Kong dollars.
Time's up. EB got it. He didn't take it to the ultimate conclusion though, but I'll let him off - he knows why ;)
Fred should have got exactly $7 and Tom exactly $1.
I thought about different prices for loaves, but it doesn't make since. If Fred is so smart, why was he laughing, he get gyped out of $2. Now it's only two dollars, but no reason for him to laugh, just Tom.
Adam. They were laughing becaue Ed had made a mistake. I'm sure ToM would have been decent enough to give Fred his $2.
