Mirror oh Mirror

How can you differentiate between a normal mirror and a 1-way mirror (used by spy and police interrogation work by CIA etc, where you can see through from the back) without turning the mirror over?

I guess if you if you'd block off part of the surface with your palms, you should be able to look through as soon as ehe front is as dark as the backside...

you simply shead a light on the mirror,a reflection is certain to appear, but if you look closely you'll find that you can see what's behind the mirror.rite??

You can tell by the "brightness" of the mirror. A true mirror reflects almost 100% of the light. A "one-way" mirror may only reflect 50% or less.

Suppose you have a light over head or a window that lets in light. Judge the amount of the reflected light to the un-reflected light.

If the reflected light is noticeable dimmer, then it is a one way mirror.

Put a light on the non-mirror side of the one way mirror, you should be able to see through it.

You strip naked in front of it. If you hear gasps and whistles then you know it was a 1 way mirror.

You put your face up to the mirror
if it is see through its one way
if it reflects just like it did when you were far away it is a normal mirror
2-way mirror= a window

A regular mirror is a piece of glass with reflective material on the back of it. It you hold your finger (or anything) directly on the mirror there will be a slight gap between your finger and the reflection. A two-way mirror does not have this gap since the reflective properties are on the surface of the glass nearest you.

If you hold up a regular mirror to it and watch how fast the "hall of mirrors" effect fades off, might that give some "in sight"? :b

...or you could just turn the lights on in the room behind the mirror, and/or off in the room in which the mirror reflects.

you put your finger on the glass and if your finger and the reflection of your finger seem to "touch" then the mirror is not a two way. if there is a space between the two then it is a one way.

It doesn't matter which side the coating is. The coating is simply thinner than with a regular mirror. It is semi-transparent.

I think 3rd post then 2nd post are the best answers.

Going into the secret room (to turn the lights on) is cheating (to put it mildly) - for obvious reasons.

if you read it closely it only says you cant go behind it. so i would get something sharp and scratch it and see if there is a film coating. or risking the supossed bad luck i would throw something at it.

Obvious! It only says you cant turn the mirror over. Go to the room next door. If it is a spy room, 2 way mirror ! if not, you are stupid.

Just turn off the light in your room. If the spy room is brighter then you can see them and they can't see you instead.

Well surely the answr depends on which side of the mirror you are on.

you may just think it is darkened glass, unless you are looking at a police line up.

And also depends on wether or not you are in a police line up.

The answer is the question is the answer.

If the mirror were to be setting on a table top, it could be slid to the edge of the table where it could be looked through without turning the mirror over.

I remember in Ripley's Believe it or Not about 15 years ago there was a thing about people who could make weird shapes with their tongue (roll them right over etc), and it encouraged you to try it out in front of a mirror. At the end of the tour, you came to a room behind the original mirror only to find it was a 2 way mirror and you could laugh at all the new people making funny faces up really close.
A bit of a giggle really.

I think it's probably if you put your hand on the other side and you see it on the side your standing on, it is not normal. If you don't see anything, that means it's the normal one.

you put the tip of your finger on the mirror. If you see a small space between you and your reflection then it's a real mirror. If you see yourself touching your reflection it's a trick mirror
