Beer and Fish
Three friends were spending a Saturday afternoon in a small boat on a lazy stream. They anchored the boat under an overhanging tree at the waters edge. After baiting hooks, each man grabbed a cold brew from the cooler. After each had downed a few, Knightmare felt the urge from mother nature and stood to gain relief. He accidentally tipped the cooler and several beers disappeared into the murky water.
The beers which had remained in the boat, were then divided equally. After each drank four more, the total beers in the boat were equal to the number each had after the division.
How many beers had been divided after the cooler tipped?

Knightmare stood up, I don't think so!
heh heh ...
18.
Some of these are more like English comprehension tests. I have got a sustificate in that. I took about 3 or 4 goes before I understood it (I prolly need more than 5 hours kip) - nothing wrong with your question though.
Cam. There were three friends, not two. Or are you assuming that Knightmare fell out of the boat in an exhausted state after having stood up?
Sheepish mode on. I might have solved "The Robbery" (yet again) LOL.
Cam
1/2x ouch (: I read it as 1/(2x)
x/2 or (1/2)x :)
certainly ... one of the two answers is correct ...
My calculation: If x is the number just after Knightmare made his bid to arise from his couch (which I assume that you have called a boat), then after the division, each had x/3. But they collectively drank 12, so x-12 remained. We have to solve x-12 = x/3 => x = 18. So each took 6, drank 4 and had 2 left (each).
I reckon Cam's gone for a coffee or to get his sustifkit in English.
Chris- i was just waiting for that floating couch comment.lol
your like a dog with a bone! :]
uh oh ... Knightmare, don't read the new problem "Boats and a Buoy"
Chris ... after a few days rest, I checked the robbery ... the source was wrong. I agree with you guys ... no unique solution. Posted a comment there.
Oh, no! I've posted a "unique" solution. LOL
That took a lot of coffee, Cam.
