The Barter System of Puzzlaria

The good residents of Puzzlaria often use a barter system to exchange goods and services. A fairly accepted equality is 85 chickens in exchange for a horse and a cow. Another accepted value is 5 horses for 12 cows.

Karl and Ross manage a small farm and are at the marketplace looking for livestock.

"Ross," said Karl, "I believe we should take as many more horses as we have already selected. This will gives us 17 horses and cows to feed through the winter."

Ross suggested, "I think we need more cows than that. If we double the number of cows we have picked, we would have 19 horses and cows ... and we would have just enough chickens for a fair trade."

How many chickens did Karl and Ross bring to the marketplace?

chicken=k, cow=c, horse=h

they have already chosen xh and yc

if they buy double the horses then they will have 2xh + yc =17

if they buy double the cows then they will have xh + 2yc =19

hence 2xh + 4yc =38

simple subtraction

3yc =21 hence yc =7 thus xh =5

then
85k = c+h
5h = 12c

425k = 5c+5h

425k = 17c

c = 25k thus h = 60k

so 14 cows and 5 horses will require 650 chickens to trade
