The Ethical Criminal

After being captured and put in jail, Jim had quite an effect upon the guards. They liked him so much, that one night his cell door was intentionally left unlocked. To the surprise of everyone, Jim remained in is cell. When asked why he did not escape, he said, "To quote Socrates, 'If you accept society's rules, you must also accept its punishments.'"

All the guards were questioned as to who left the cell door unlocked. Here are the comments:

Guard A:
1. I did not leave the door open.
2. C was the one who did it.

Guard B:
1. I was not on duty that evening.
2. A was on duty.

Guard C:
1. B was on duty that evening.
2. I hope Jim would escape.

Guard D:
1. I did not leave the door open.
2. I am not surprised that Jim did not try to escape.

Of the eight statements, only three are true.

Which guard left the cell door unlocked?

I believe it was guard D

No clever maths.....just process of elimination.

I think it was guard D. It was first said that everyone was surprised, but then D wasn't. So, he may had worked that whole thing out.

The answer is dependent on if Guard C hopes Jim would escape.

-if "I hope Jim would escape" is False then A or B could have done it

-if the statement is True then only D could have done it.

The problem statement says that they like Jim, but it doesn't provide sufficient information to conclude that Guard C hoped Jim would escape.

Just my thoughts...
