How long the palindrome?

As you know, a palindrome word is one which reads the same forwards or backwards.
Examples:

reviver
repaper

What is the longest common English palendromic word?
Is there one longer than 7 letters?

I hate to write this, but I think that someone here at work needs a little dose of shame...
After hearing the question, he pondered for a while, and came up with kayak.... so far, so good. He then asked the question, "can you think of any numeric palindromes with nine numbers, or more...?"
Shameful enough you might think, but I responded with "No, the highest known palindromic number is three digits".
Sadly 1/2 an hour later he came back with a 5 digit palindrome.
I can't wait for him to come back with some biggies by the end of the day.
He teaches religion or some such nonsense... and you know who you are Father Hunwicke!

On the subject of palindromic numbers, there's the 196 problem.

Wiktionary has a good list of long palindromes, including "tattarrattat" (12 letters, coined by James Joyce for Ulysses and never used since) and "detartrated" (11 letters, also somewhat contrived)
