After all these years, it has finally happened. We have received an intelligent message from somewhere in space. Nasa and Seti are so excited ... but what does it mean?

It means, "we do math."
2 + 2 = 4
2 + 3 = 5
5 - 2 = 3
6 - 3 = 3
I like Ross's answer, but I don't see the same corroboration for the equal sign on the last equation.
Besides, if they had managed to send a message to outer space, surely they would have maths skills under their belt?

I alone know the true message behind the lines and squiggles. You are made to think it is a simple math thing, but I know the truth. The true message is shown not only through the lines and squiggles. You must look beyond them and feel the vibes coming from the message. I will not reveal the true message to you, for it is only meant for those who are able to read it and not for those who wish to understand, but don't. It may seem confusing, but not understanding certain aspects is life and only those who understand the message understand why they cannot tell other's who don't know what it means.
