Shaking hands

At the end of a party, everyone shakes hands with each other. A latecomer arrives and shakes hands only with the people he knew. In total sixty-eight handshakes occurred. How many people at the party did the straggler know ?

(One handshake occurs when two people shake hands).

If there were 13 people and everone shakes hands
with everyone else then there would be 78 handshakes.

If there were 12 people shaking everyone elses hand there
would be 66 handshakes. So the 13th to showup only knew 2 people.

Another 10 second wonder! 2 people it is, and 12 people originally at the party.

If onnly 11 people were at the party, then that would be 55 handshakes by them, the straggler would then have to make 13 handshakes, so that isn't possible.

You know, I wish the comment count was accurate. I go to a post, and see the "comments =0", so I think I will give it a go. I solved this and chose to make a comment, and I see, hours ago someone has my same solution.

It's a little disappointing. If I choose to check the zero, I might see a someone else's result.

My solution to that would be... You can't read any comments until you post a comment. Oh, I would like that.

You could choose to make comment and delete it I suppose if you didn't like the idea.
