The Thief

Detective Knightmare was staying at the Conundrum Hotel in Puzzletown. He was sitting on the bed in his room. He had just finished oiling his pistol when heard a knock at the door.

He was working on a case and had pictures lying all over the bed. He scooped up the pictures and placed them back in their folder. He slipped his pistol in to the drawer on the table beside the bed. He heard someone insert a key card into the lock. He hurried to the door and opened it.

"Oh, I'm sorry," said the stranger. "I must have gotten off the elevator at the wrong floor. I thought this was my room. They all look identical, you know."

The stranger laughed weakly, made a hand gesture towards the elevator, and headed in that direction.

Knightmare closed his door and immediately dialed the front desk of the hotel. He informed that a man was stalking the halls and up to no good. He described the man and suggested that hotel security should look for him.

Why did Knightmare suspect the stranger was up to no good?

Um, maybe because the rooms would have had numbers on them? I dunno.

I think i got this one!

Knightmare is a detective, and he had a picture of the guy on his bed!

"He was working on a case and had pictures lying all over the bed. He scooped up the pictures and placed them back in their folder."

It just so happened that the guy who knocked was in one of Knightmares pictures as a criminal.

Wait!

Was it because the guy was able to open Knightmare's door?

I'd think that only Knightmare and the hotel staff would have the key, right?

So the guy swiped a key?

well a key card should only work for one room. he somehow got a duplicate key card and didn't realize the room was occupied.

Knightmare opened the door ...

Or the fact that the keys should obviously have the door number on it.

That's another of my 3 guesses. How do you get the door wrong when it says clearly on the key?

Room numbers start with the floor they are on, so he must have intentionally picked the wrong floor

Hi Eketahuna ...
you are right ... it if was his room, he would not have knocked. The knock was to see if anyone was in the room.
