The elevator

Posted by Chris on October 12, 2011 – 7:53 am

OK here’s one:

A man lives in a 50 floor building on the top floor. In the morning he can go down in the elevator but after work he can’t go back up unless someone’s with him. Why?

Suggeststed by Smart Thyng AKA Gus

(I suspect that everyone knows this one).

Another one from me. A little harder this time.

You are in a room with only two ways out, two doors on either side. One door leads to paradise while the other one leads to hell. Guarding each door is a man. The one man can only tell the truth and the other one can only lie. You may only ask one man one question to find the right door. What question would you ask him.

  2. 2. Ilse Said:

Here is my answer and the only answer I could think of. Since he can go down in the elevator, meaning that buttons are lower and going up the buttons will be higher. So he was too short to reach the top buttons to get to his floor, unless someone is there to press the button for him.

Sup ilse. I’m Gus aka Smat thyng. You’re 100% correct. I geuss you’ve heard it before but if not well done. See if you can try crack my other one.

Hi Smart Thyng. Your next problem is well known too :( There is a very good advanced version of that. As it hasn’t been posted for ages. I might try and dig it up.

  5. 5. Jesdane Said:

He is very short and button 50 is very high this means that he would need someone to push the button for him

  6. 6. mishu Said:

you ask any of the two “what would your colleagues say that is the right way out?” and choose the other one

the one that lies will tell the opposite of what the one that tell the truth would – the lie

the one that tells the truth tells you exactly what would the other one say – the lie

  7. 7. JB Said:

You can also ask either of the two, “If I had asked you yesterday what is the right way outta here, what would your answer have been?” The answer will always be correct.

  8. 8. Chris Said:

I like that one JB. It reminds me of the more advanced version of the problem.

    Gus,

I never heard this one either. So I’m going to take the best that I have come out with. At first my question was going to be tell me the color of a pen or a simple question that I know the answer to, but then I remember that the main thing here is to know which door to take. So I would say ” Which door leads to where I don’t want to go?” Lets say the correct door I want to go was right. WELL the liar would say it is left, while the honest one would say left as well, so I will take the right door. I’m not sure if I make myself clear. But either way, the answer of the liar would be equal to the answer of the honest one and therefore you do the opposite when they both have the same answer. Please tell me if I’m correct or not?

  10. 10. Ilse Said:

I forgot to mention that the reason why the question cannot be “Which doors leads to the correct door” because if the correct door is right and the liar says left and the honest one says right you would not know the correct answer because you don’t know who lies or says the truth. Therefore asking them which is the wrong door allows for both answer to be wrong and at the end you choose the opposite of the wrong answer.

Just to be picky….”A man lives in a 50 floor building on the top floor. In the morning he can go down in the elevator but after work he can’t unless someone’s with him. Why?”

The question infers that the man cannot go down in the elevator after work. This means the height of the buttons is immaterial.

The answer is correct, when the question states that he cannot go to his floor after work, or gets out at floor 40 and walks the rest of the way up…

This would also lead me to the conclusion that the little guy ain’t big and ain’t clever – he could take a walking stick with him and use the tool to press the correct button. This is one of the things that separated us from the monkeys, that, opposable thumbs and taxes.

  12. 12. JB Said:

Or the little guy could wear elevator shoes.

  13. 13. ryanlalion Said:

or the guy works in a posh hotl of some sort and lives there and he works as the elevator man who press the buttons to the floor whoever is in way him therefore he can only go up wen someone needs a floor or wne he is finished work

    Unfortunately the question reads like this;

“A man lives in a 50 floor building on the top floor. In the morning he can go down in the elevator but after work he can’t [go down in the elevator] unless someone’s with him. Why?”

It would be more helpful if it read.

“A man lives in a 50 floor building on the top floor. In the morning he can go down in the elevator but after work he can’t go back up to the 50th floor in the elevator unless someone’s with him. Why?”

My answer would of course be,

“He needs someone with him in the elevator after work because he can’t face the soul destroying solitude of his flat by himself. So he trawls the bars at night looking for lone females to distract him from the emptiness he feels. Only then, with a young lady in tow, can he face his lofty isolating flat.
In the morning he awakes, finding himself alone in his bed, gets dressed and steps once again into the empty lift as the cycle of his working day repeats itself.”

  15. 15. Shellie Said:

He cant go down after work because he is already down, because he went down to go to work. So the correct answer to the way the question was asked is he can only go down in the elevator after work unless someone else is with him to go down on.

I’ve fixed the question. It didn’t mention that he couldn’t go back up after work. Chris
