  5. 5. gabe Said:

    Going N-W means traveling on a straight line angling 45 degrees off the Ecuator. Drawing a line from the N Pole perpendicular to the Ecuator will create an isosceles triangle with that line and the Ecuator.
    If X is the distance requested, and D is the line from the Pole perpendicular to the Ecuator where D = 40000 km / 4 = 10000 km, then

    X^2 = D^2 + D^2, or

    X = 10000 x sqrt(2) = 14300 km

    @gabe:
    Huh, what?

    I think Ping got it all right.

  9. 9. Karl Sharman Said:

    Yep, all present and correct.

    I thought H to O – H20 – Water might be a toughie (well done John) – and Argon Laser – I though people might go for Jumble Sale.

    We’ll need some tougher ones next time round!

  10. 10. Euclid's Brother Said:

    Karl, Nice puzzle, I enjoyed it. Thanks.

    gabe:

    First, Wrong thread.. lol

    Secondly, I think you mean, right Triangle, not isosceles. (Which is still wrong because a triangle is 2D and we’re on a curved surface.)

    Thirdly, the Theorom Pythagoris does not work on a curved surface. As before, it’s on a curved surface so it’s not really a triagle.
