Imprisonment

Posted by DP on December 27, 2010 – 2:22 pm

Chris, a citizen of Karlonia commits a severe crime and is brought to the castle to face his punishment. Karl, King of Karlonia though a ruthless tyrant, is a man of his word. Karl says to Chris “You shall make a statement. If it is true, I will sentence you to 20 years in prison. However, if it is false, I will sentence you to life in prison.”
After Chris made his statement, Karl decided to let him go free.
What did Chris say to King Karl?

Go ahead Karl, sentence me for life in prison.

  2. 2. Anonymous Said:

He might have said that living is his own prison because there is no way to correct his crime.

  3. 3. Random Guy Said:

    @nordtorp, That is a suggestion, not a statement :P

Its actually: You will sentence me to life in prison.

  4. 4. nordtorp Said:

Random Guy, you’re right. That comment cost my life.

  5. 5. Euclid's Brother Said:

He said, “You will sentence me to life in prison”.

If Karl does, then that would have been a true statement, which meant only 20 years in prison, if Karl only sentences him for 20 years, then it’s false and he should have gotten life. So there’s no way Karl to sentence him and hold true to his word.

  6. 6. Horbz Said:

My post dissappeared! =[ anyway it was “You will sentence me to a life in prison”

  7. 7. Anthony Elmore Said:

but agreeing with post five, if his statement is you will sentence me to life, it cannot be true because if it were he would only get twenty years, not life. unless they kill him after twenty years saying he will be sentenced to life cannot be a true statement.

  8. 8. cantrel Said:

It is Chris parole hearing, he has already served 20years, if he repents and admits his guilt and remorse, he is a freeman, he says ” I am sorry “

  9. 9. bettina Said:

he would say that he is in trouble right now for committing a crime and that he is being challenged by the king to make a true statement. because after all, that is true.

or he can say that king karl is a man of his of his words as stated in the riddle.

  10. 10. memeandi Said:

okhe probably said put me in prison like my life isnt bad enough already!

    lol *_*

  11. 11. Adrian Lala Said:

How about “My statement is false.” ?
On this statement, Karl would be in a lot of trouble deciding a sentence…

  12. 12. Joey Said:

He says “This statement is false.”

If it is true, then it is false. If it is false, then it is not false and therefore true. If it is true, then it is false. If it is false, then it is not false and therefore true, and so on ad infinitum. King Karl is perpetually stumped, and sits on his throne scratching his head. This scratching then progresses to eye-bulging and then foaming at the mouth. King Karl keels over, comatose, and Chris walks away a free man.

  13. 13. DP Said:

Well as some have guessed, Chris says “You will sentence me to life in prison”.
If Chris was false in saying this, Karl would have to sentence him to life in prison, making his statement true.
If Chris were correct in his statement, then Karl would have to sentence him to 20 years, making the statement false.
Since Karl is a man of his word, He could not go back on it and punish Chris to either sentence, so he sets him free.

  14. 14. colton Said:

if you put me in prison for 20 years and it will be for the rest of my life there for ether way you will sentence me to life ether way

truth there for he had to be let go because he told the truth and was told if he did he would not be sentence to life

  15. 15. DP Said:

    Interesting view Colton.
I actually found this riddle on a different site and altered the story slightly. I was hoping people would struggle with it a little longer, but i guess people had heard this one before. I hadn’t.

  16. 16. Chris Said:

??? wot. Pedanticism aside, I think it had really been cracked in the first post, by nordtorp.

  17. 17. jdawgbfrog Said:

I’m curious to know what crime Chris committed.
Perhaps he should just not say anything until he has a good lawyer.
